Katawa Shoujo has only two good routes - Lily and Hanako (Hanako FTW). Rin and Emi are alright, but Shizune has a shitty route.
As for G Senjou no Maou, I really enjoyed that entire route, especially Kyousuke's badass moments. That part where Gonzou (one of my favorites) died and the one where Kyousuke threatened Horibe, who in turn said that Kyousuke is starting to resemble the boss... those scenes sent shivers down my spine.
I disliked how Kyousuke wasn't Maou (Even though it is implicitly said in previous chapters that he was Maou) and how they just pulled the whole 'it was his brother all along' card, but the execution after that overwrote my misgivings.
That ending was just perfect - He became the new boss of the Yakuza gang and had a cute daughter as well. I knew the kid was his, since I just couldn't see Haru going with anyone else, especially considering how long she had been after Kyousuke. Of all the girls, Haru's development was only better than Shiratori's which was abysmal. Then again, I liked Tsubaki's good and bad endings, as well as Shiratori's bad ending (which was badass as hell). The entire Kanon route was crap. The main good point of the VN was that it was extremely enjoyable, which is exactly why I'd give it the same score as you. Muv Luv Alternative is pretty much the only VN that I liked more.
Honestly, I never really liked Berserk. I dropped it after the Golden Age arc (heresy, I know). Then again, I found Oyasumi Punpun a lot more depressing than whatever Berserk I had read, since Punpun is a lot more realistic and relatable. The main difference is that the darkness of Oyasumi Punpun hides beneath the surface, while its completely out in the open in Berserk.
The bird thing is actually much better than a regular depiction, once you get used to it. The various forms Punpun takes as he matures really adds to his development (though I personally hate the character). The artwork in general is extremely surreal, especially in the former half, where you'd actually start questioning the sanity of the author haha.
I dropped Sankarea a few chapters before it ended, since it was starting to annoy me. I liked Rea to begin with, but that stopped when she started going out of control. The only character I really liked in that series was the zombie cat XD
I tried VNDS a couple of times, but it never really worked out for me. The only decent VN that has a proper android port is Katawa Shoujo, which is pretty readable.
Oyasumi Punpun is a work of art. It's insanely depressing (one of the main reasons why I've put it on hold), but the suspense, art and depth of character is something else. I read a hundred chapters in one sitting before I realized that it was negatively impacting my mental health haha
Sankarea... Well, I dropped that one after around 50 chapters or so. It was okay, but nothing all that great.
Cross Channel is one crazy mess of a VN, but the reveals are executed brilliantly. If you're facing issues, the common fixes are changing your system locale to Japan and running in Win XP SP3 compatibility mode. If that doesn't work, then windowed mode it is haha
I've been putting off Lain for a while now, along with Paranoia Agent and Ergo Proxy, mainly because I prefer to read dark manga and watch lighthearted anime these days. I guess I'll switch that order sometime soon, so I'll watch them then.
I never called NGE an escapist anime and I understood most, if not all the psychological aspects (I've studied a bit of Psychology, so I tend to analyze the characters). The main issue is how it was a disjointed mess. I watched it fairly recently and I had to force myself to go on after the initial few episodes, on the vain hope that it might improve over time. I found the story boring and the characters disjointed and annoying. The vast majority of the characters were annoying, but still bearable... but not Shinji. I understand his circumstances and everything, but that doesn't change the fact that I want to slap the crap out of him every time he appears on screen. Had the anime been focused on any other character, I might have been able to watch it.
Also, no, the last two episode just made my opinion of the anime even worse, while End of Evangelion just destroyed it XD
I'm not entirely sure why I stopped watching Spice and Wolf (most probably because I found something really good to watch instead... given the date, it was most likely Psycho Pass). I certainly will continue it sometime soon (especially considering how I'm on the lookout for calming anime at the moment.
Shirobako is another anime I've been meaning to continue, but something about it didn't appeal to me. Maybe it was the whole thing about working on a 'Moe' anime, which is the type of anime I dislike the most. That part about imagining the characters really annoyed me. Then again, given how people go on praising it, I definitely will continue it.
Got Flying Witch downloaded and ready, but I never really expected anything from it. I guess I'll move it up the list for now.
Kill la Kill and Gurren Lagann... two shows I found very difficult to watch. The combination of weird artwork and randomness really put me off it. Kekkai Sensen was another anime which put me off for similar reasons, but I found it more watchable than the other two. I tried watching Kill la Kill six times now, but I always drop it within a few episodes. Gurren Lagann, I may continue, but sometime way in the future when my to-watch list is freed up a little.
Genroku Rakugou has been on my list ever since it made the first page of the top anime list and I have it downloaded and ready. In fact, I have all these anime downloaded (I'm a collector). Because of that, my to-watch list is enormous. I have 87 anime downloaded that I haven't watched yet XD
I'll certainly watch it sometime soon as well.
I noticed that you haven't read all that many manga. If you're up for recommendations, then check out this post (it's mine)
http://9gag.com/gag/agG3ryw
Recommendations are always welcome, so I'll definitely check it out. I rarely find good Light Novels, so that's an additional plus.
As for VNs, I'm always willing to recommend stuff.
G Senjou no Maou was my first serious VN, which is one of the best ways to start. If you enjoyed it, check out 'Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo', which is basically the contemporary of G Senjou no Maou, by the same studio. It has a much better protagonist and antagonist than its successor, but it tends to be a little dramatic at times. Given how Clannad: After Story is on your favorites list, I'm pretty sure you wont have any issues with melodrama XD
Given how you enjoyed Fate/Zero, You should give Fate/Stay Night a read. It's FAR more enjoyable than any of its anime adaptations (Except Zero, which wasn't even based on the VN to begin with).
Try reading Steins;Gate once your memories of the anime have dimmed down a little. Its a little better than the anime.
Read Saya no Uta if you want some really f*cked up shit. It's a good thriller, but it also makes you go 'wtf' more often than not. It's really gruesome and gory, so its not for everyone.
Kara no Shoujo is a brilliant mystery VN set in 1950's Japan, which features some gruesome murders and some really traumatic shit. Highly recommended as long as you can take some emotional punishment. If you're going into this one, you'll have to read Cartagra either before both installments or at least before Kara no Shoujo 2.
Muv Luv is by far my favorite VN and also my favorite thing Japan has produced so far. It has 3 parts, which I'll describe a little below:
- Extra: This is the first part, which is extremely cliched. A lot of common tropes are present in this one, so it's usually described as the toughest part to get through. I found it pretty funny though.
- Unlimited: This is where the real stuff starts. There's a major genre shift, which really ups the ante. Extra and Unlimited come in the same package, with unlimited being unlocked once Extra has been completed.
- Alternative: This is the meat of the VN. It comes in a separate package, but is longer than Extra and Unlimited combined. Alternative is the best part of the series and is what made me fall in love with its world. Pretty much everything about this one is perfect.
You could also check out Cross Channel, which is really weird shit, but with really good character development and story progression. Another VN which will make you go 'wtf' more often than not.
I generally advice against reading VNs by Key, but Rewrite, Kanon and Planetarian are the only exceptions I've come across so far.
Hope this helps :D
