I can see where you are coming from with the antagonist plot conveniences, but I think this part comes down to how high your tolerance level is for plot conveniences and how much you are willing those plot conveniences to be obstructed by the plot structure and themes of the anime. Take for example the ending of Your Name. Sure, it seems *really* convenient that they met there, but seeing the story played it out, there wasn't any other way that could have such an emotional ending if they didn't met there. And that is where I am with Odd Taxi. While its plot conveniences are sometimes really convenient, it is easy to ignore because of the density of plot that is going on. The structure of Odd Taxi is so well planned out, so well constructed, so *dense* that after a while the plot conveniences become part of the larger narrative that everything is connected one way or another. (also the likable and well written characters are able to distract from the plot conveniences but that is just a matter of taste)
I think plot convenience isn't a bad criticism by itself. If a story wants to be engaging on its own you have to at least believe that the things in the anime can happen, and plot convenience can certainly ruin that immersion. And Odd Taxi does have some moments which could be considered "plot convenienc", like when the gun gets found.
But the thing is: I think you are missing the larger picture of the story. I am not saying you don't get what the story is about, but I do think you misunderstand what the inherent fun of the story is: the fact that everything is connected. Almost every plot element in the anime has a purpose. One thing in a sub-story effects another which effects another thing. The thrill of watching Odd Taxi for many isn't just the story itself, but the way the story progresses and flows through character arcs, plot points and plot twists. The anime does feature plot convenience, but it is a small price to pay for a story to be this tightly constructed and written.
I can simply disagree with how good the dialogue is (I think it is insanely well written with a lot of witty, sarcastic dialogue that can be equally funny as it can be thrilling), that is just a matter of taste. But I do think you seriously misunderstand the point of Odd Taxi and, please don't mind me if this sounds pseudo-intellectual, are only willing to look at the anime on a surface level.
I personally suggest giving Odd Taxi another look and to not just slam the breaks every time something you consider a plot convenience happens, but to pay attention to everything that happens, especially if things were foreshadowed in the beginning of the anime.
Well I know that Jimihen !!: Jimiko wo Kaechau Jun Isei Kouyuu !! It does not have a very good story as such, almost no short Hentai has it but you understand my point hehehehehe
