I am the Bishounen Hunter.... I like anime with good looking people, specifically with good looking guys. There are TONS of anime out there that cater to guys [and some girls too] who like girls. Anime offering tons of scantily clad, big-breasted girls doing oh so cute and naughty no-nos and other types of fan service of the same ilk. But there are much fewer anime that offer up good looking guys.....really good-looking guys. Be it shonen, shoujo, yaoi whatever! I seek them out and watch them.....even if the original intent was not to showcase bishies. That's why I'm the Bishounen Hunter.
I don't know if I would be considered an otaku, my life doesn't completely revolve around anime. I have a handful of figurines, no anime posters....I know next to nothing about voice actors or production companies and I've never been to any sort of convention [tho I'd REEEEAAALLY like to!] That being said, I've been watching anime for a loooooooong time [early eighties; think Battle of the Planets, ROBOTECH and Macron 1] and back then you took whatever was offered.....whether that was some watered down TV show they directed towards kids or some random VHS they offered at the local comic-book store. I used to welcome anything anime because it fascinated me more than comic books and American-style cartoons. Even most TV shows. However since the massive boom of the anime explosion from the 90's, we have been exposed to other sub-genres within the anime culture and I have since developed my own tastes and sense of aesthetics when it comes to watching anime:
- Keep it neat.
- Keep it attractive.
- Keep it real.
- Gimme a cohesive / fleshed-out storyline
- Gimme credible characters, I want to believe in
- Gimme some drama. [but good drama is always a plus]
- Downplay the fan-service. [But small amounts are OK]
I do have my own tendencies and favourite types of anime [Bishonen, Shoujo, Drama, Romance, Shounen-ai, and Yaoi [not too explicit]. But even though I tend to watch these types of anime that have a decidedly feminine appeal with a lot of emotions and drama, does not mean that I do not or have not watched SHOUNEN anime, I have watched Naruto, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, the DragonBall series And I love most anything Macross or Gundam. So I guess you could say I still do love all types of animes and will watch most anything....provided it's a COMPLETED project and was done properly.....and there's not a lot of senseless or unnecessary fan-service.
On scoring & reviewing anime, I'll say this much, I'm only really writing reviews for a specific audience: namely, those OVER 25! I think the distance between myself and a teenager [and those in close proximity] are too great. Our perspective on anime are too different. I tend to look at an anime for it's overall content and quality and how it stands compared to other shows I've seen thru the years. Subjective? Yes! But so is ANY REVIEW!! I'm also a positive person [but I can be a blunt person too, at times]. I try to be fair and nice and to be encouraging to most any work of anime since I am passionate about this field of artistic expression. I've seen way more than I review, and it's that way because probably I'd be giving out a lot of TENS than I should. Every once in a while there are shows that are just beyond reproach and they get scored low or I have to write a bad review. :( I've also decided on not reviewing anime that already have TONS of reviews, like what's the point??? Unless I'm specifically asked my opinion to review that title. Otherwise I'll only be reviewing the ones that have the least reviews.
And there you have it.......Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu!
