Hello, ladies and gentlemen. Instead of giving away my real name, I would prefer going by my username, BiitoreinGoji — but you are more than welcome to call me Goji.
My history with Japanese animation is a typical one, yet one of interest. As a kid who grew up in the 90s and 2000s, I watched the original
Pokémon and
Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series on Cartoon Network before going to school in the morning. When CN’s anime block, Toonami, came on at night, I saw the likes of
DragonBall (
Z and
GT),
Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo,
Gundam, and Hayao Miyazaki’s
Spirited Away (2001). I’m not sure if watching
Avatar: The Last Airbender on Nickelodeon counts as anime, but I feel it’s worth mentioning because
Avatar's a really great show. Then in 2014, as an adult, I saw
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (2007) and my interest in Japanese animation grew exponentially. It was an awesome, fun series. The story was written expertly, and the characters were so likable. The art and animation, it was beautiful to look at. So, for a while in college, I joined an anime club and met people who knew more than I did about the same interest we had. We watched classic and modern titles, but we didn’t discuss the ins and outs of the medium that much. Modern titles at the time like
Love Tyrant (2017) (a.k.a.
Kiss Note) and
Gabriel Dropout (2017) were awful. I was introduced to the
Macross series with
Macross Frontier and
Delta which were entertaining, but I wasn’t interested. However, classic titles like
Black Lagoon (2006),
Cromartie High School (2003), and
Rune Soldier (2001) were great. Eventually, I graduated from college, so I had to watch anime series by myself. But when discussing anime with others online, I can talk about it in-depth with like-minded people which is great.
All in all, I find myself tending to gravitate toward classic anime series like an antiquarian. I tend to really love and appreciate the things that I specialize in while also being open to trying new things that I can become familiar with and enjoy. Just to name a few other titles I’ve seen and really enjoy, we have:
- Kill La Kill (2013)
- Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995)
- Noir (2001)
- Madlax (2004)
- El Cazador De La Bruja (2007)
- Attack on Titan
From what I can see, MyAnimeList is the anime version of Rotten Tomatoes, in that subjective opinions of content are looked at as objective measures of quality. This is impossible. Objectivity is a fair and unbiased means of measuring the good and bad qualities of any piece of content whereas subjectivity is based on one’s personal preferences, feelings, and tastes. Ultimately, everyone is more than welcome to form an opinion based on objective truth or subjective perspective. So in the events that I do come here and give my assessment of content and engage in discussion, the vast majority of my points will not be about perspective, they will be about facts.
