STB Anime vs. Light Novels
I'm just some guy that loves anime, manga, and video games. I also really got into movies when I got my part-time job at a movie theater in very late August 2012. I really like learning more about how anime works, the production, the history of the industry, and over time, got more interested in the actual animation in anime. My Sakugabooru favorites can be found
here.
I got into anime in November 2008 when I was 14 and in the 8th grade. I had watched anime very casually when I caught it on TV since I was a kid on places like Kids WB, Cartoon Network and their
Toonami programming block. When Toonami got cancelled, I became rather sad and frustrated at the cancellation of the programming block in September 2008. Soon after I kept hearing talk about this anime called
Bleach and tried it on [adult swim] starting with Episode 87. I later went back and quickly got through Episodes 1-86.
I quickly fell in love with Bleach which ended up becoming my gateway anime, and I still love it to this day. Though I don't think as well about the overall quality of it back when I was newer to the anime fandom. I started watching more and more anime on [adult swim] such as
Code Geass,
Death Note,
Cowboy Bebop,
The Big O II,
InuYasha,
Fullmetal Alchemist, and later started to get into more shows not on [adult swim] like
Suzuka,
Shakugan no Shana,
Karin,
Lucky*Star,
School Rumble, and quickly ended up becoming an otaku. Anime is now my biggest passion, surpassing video games which for the longest time was my biggest passion.

How I Rate Anime and Manga:
10. Masterpiece
9. Excellent / Amazing
8. Very good / Fairly good
7. Good
6. Decent
5. Mediocre
4. Bad
3. Really bad
2. How can one make something this bad?
1. Bad beyond belief, completely incompetent.
Note: I don't rate based off of purely enjoyment as I've found that "Enjoyable≠Good" and "Not enjoyable≠Bad". Of course I usually enjoy good shows, and find nothing but pain through the bad. My scores are based off of how I feel the quality of the show is overall. My enjoyment score is fairly close to the overall the majority of the time. Also, I do not take art, animation, or sound into my scoring much as I tend to value characters and story more. You can have fantastic visuals, but if there's nothing helping to support that, the show usually falls apart. I score based off of story + character, then divide that by 2. Ex:
Hyouka Story: 6/10 Character: 8/10 Overall: 7/10
Note 2: Everything I have in "Plan to Watch" isn't everything I want to watch. The mostly complete list of that can be found on my
AniDB list. Specials attached to a TV series won't be found in this section as AniDB puts them under the actual show and will separate them from the main episode count. Also, I have rewatched anime before, I just don't track that here on MAL as I'm curious about my initial time investment. I will have a blog entry in the future showing what I've rewatched. My rewatches are currently only tracked on my
Anime-Planet list.
Feel free to ask me what I thought about a show if the score isn't enough for you. You can also look
here for shows I feel are bad/mediocre that I at least decently liked.

my gateway anime would be the comic artist and his assistants, its the anime that got me into anime, and ive always called it my first anime
i was a horny 13 year old in 2019 searching stuff on youtube, when i found a clip from the comic artist and his assistants
after that i realized i could watch it for free on crunchyroll, so i decided to stop being horny and start watching anime
the day after that i realized i needed to find more shows to watch so i scrolled on crunchyroll and saw the quintessential quintuplets and thought it looked good, so i watched it and ive been an anime fan ever since
i havent watched the comic artist and his assistants ever since it was removed from crunchyroll a few years ago, but i do enjoy hiroyuki's other anime, and i recently bought the first volume of aho girl and have been enjoying reading it
i had seen other anime before this. just a few weeks before this i watched one punch man. a year before that i got into dragon ball after adult swim lost the rights to king of the hill and didnt know what to air at 8pm. a year before that i secretly watched kampfer since i was also a horny 11 year old. and i grew up watching shows like beyblade, pokemon, doraemon, and yokai watch on cartoon network and disney xd
so i think gateway anime is a more accurate way to describe it than first anime. my uncle even tells me i watched dragon ball with him when i was a baby
I agree that the recent animes are usually getting worse, this is why I tend to only watch anime that I think may be good
"Also I see your ratings don't collapse after 2012 as mine do. ", it's probably because I've seen most anime from these years, hence I get both the perfect ones here and the absolute hot garbage that most people watched. And tbh, I haven't seen much older anime.
Though you could still see a declining slope for ratings on my graph, it's not as clearly visible as yours, but most anime that came out recently are either just not my taste, or I usually just watch more garbage than finishing good shows.
'If you've read the light novels, it enhances one's enjoyment of the anime, but that's a sign of a bad adaptation." I have to agree, the reason why I gave COTE a 2 is because of that reason, I will look into STB LN, thanks a lot!
I looked into it more and realized, wow, I like this person's taste,
since the scores I've given are pretty similar to yours, I am just curious if there are any shows that you would recommend, thanks a lot for reading this over-the-top message that doesn't need to be this long.
Good to know Joel McCray's track record is much better, I wonder, was he the one who botched the first release of Votoms?
I was actually just looking at the that set the other day on ebay and was wondering just what the Japanese bonus disc contained, it's a pretty slick release.
Recently bought the stand alone Honneamise Gunbuster & Diebuster releases and was surprised that even the shrink wrap was of quality, 13 years later and none of that weird sticking on the case you get with a lot of releases these days. Can't wait to have the OVAs on blu-ray though, they really suffer in movie format.
I only recently started caring more in depth about the technical and quality aspects of home video releases but have been collecting for a while now so a lot of your posts have been pretty informative.
Do you prefer David Williams or John McCray's BD authoring in sentai releases?
Also, I saw you own both releases of Gunbuster the movie, any difference between releases?
Other ADV artboxes that used cardboard rather than chipboard include Azumanga Daioh, Cromartie High School, DN Angel, Gasaraki (collection only; no "Vol X + Artbox" release), King of Bandit Jing, Prétear, Sister Princess, Super Gals! S1, and Zaion ~ i wish you were here.
Cromartie HS in March '05 was the last cardboard box ADV release I know of, unless something like Gilgamesh or Getbackers or Samurai Gun went that route. The Sojitz titles that did Vol. 2 + Artbox were all chipboard, afaik. Of course, ADV's official descriptions found on ANN always mention the "high-quality artbox," no matter what type of artbox was actually used.
