Zeta was surely the source of it in the West, but he has the same reputation in Japan, and there he became associated with that with the Ideon movie and Dubine (even if Zambot did it first).

Reading your Gundam guide, it's a pretty nice introduction so far, but I'll make one correction: Tomino's Kill em All reputation actually predates Zeta, with shows of him like Zambot 3, Ideon and Dunbine all already cementing that status to him years earlier.
