I don’t think a complex character makes a good character. Her downfall and redemption is what makes her great, her finally farting over Tenma and all that. She isn’t likeable but she’s an excellent character.
I’ve got a lot to say about Eva, and I think even if she isn’t super likesble she’s a super great character. If you’d like I can go more in depth after I get home from work.
It's not on my list of 100 anime I have in the works to see but eventually I might get around to it.
As for blunt stories, it's a lot of framing and how they handle it.
I'm ok with stuff like Pokemon since it can be very light hearted and silly fun, where as something like Inuyashiki just doesn't work for me the same. Idk if it's tone I have an issue with or something else but how it handles itself just doesn't work for me. It feels a lot more nasty and mean spirited just cause yet still trying to be over the top with how it does it's violent stuff.
It just feels really off to me in a way that most other anime don't. Maybe I would like something like Gantz but Inuyashiki? Not so much.
