I'm too lazy to write something substantial here, so I will improve it whenever I feel like it.
I'm also too lazy to update my manga list, and I read way more than I watch anime. So you can have an idea of how incomplete it is now. Anime list is complete tho... I think.
Great reviw on Golden Kamuy! Reading it at this very moment and I love everything about it. If it continues like this, it may end up taking the number 1 spot for me of all time!
Its just that the harem aspect of an anime, one character having polygamous relationships with others of the opposite gender, is always being misinterpret.
A series is NOT a harem just because 3 or 4 girls like or even love the MC, that's just an element, not a genre of its own.
SAO, Oregairu, Toradora, Sakurasou, and such romance titles are, simply, not harem since the MCs do not have polygamous relationships, all girls accept (spoiler alert) MC's choice and do not try to harm their relationship.
That's of course a subjective view, my viewpoint of things, thus you just don't have to agree.
What I am going to say isnt valid enough to be a fact, but its rather true...
All harem anime focus on all of the girls and subsequently, the main character never knows and more importantly, never chooses which girl to end up with.
Plus, they just fall for the main character for no fucking reason, literally...at least the harem anime I have watched are like so.
So, that means shows like toradora or oregairu where many girls (3 or more) claim the protagonists are harems?
Cause SAO is the exact same things, with the exception that Kirito always had Asuna...
Kirito's battle with Heathcliff ended like so; Heathcliff stabbed Kirito, Kirito's senses as he had been mentioning in the whole first novel, were triggered and he was able to stab Heathcliff at the time between his HP run out and body shattered.
SAO is hated for its anime adaptation, not its original meterial and that's a fact.Very few people have both watched the anime and read the novel, cause the fans dont care and the haters dont bother doing so....
Dude, no just...nope, you can't call SAO anime's Justin Bieber...it's just way too much...Naruto, Fairy Tail and Bleach get much more hate than SAO IRL, its just that here on MAL ppl dont ''bother'' with them...
Ive already read his reviews and I can say that:
They include valid arguements
They are quite elaborate,but...
Most statements are either explained or patched up in the novel,
while the remaining ones can be debated.
None, I mean, literally none of them, is an actual plot hole or valid flaw of the series.
Then you shall allow to counter your arguements...
Well, it IS supposed to be about Kirito. SAO is a character-driven story.
Thats what these kinds of stories do.
Second, it was mentioned that SAO was different from all other RPGs because it was a death game.
Exp would be divided among party members, which drove many players and especially the beta testers to play solo.
SAO was not your regular MMO, ppl were fighting for their lives, so Kayaba altered your regular MMO rules.
Plus, he was a member of the cleaning crew, so he teamed up with them to battle the bosses, just like every other solo player.
The Laughing Coffin were simply bad ppl. They didnt care about anything, especially their leader, who are introduced to in the Alicization arc.
Character development isnt the strongest point of SAO, but we learn more andmore things about them as time progresses.
BUT, you just cant say that we dont know much about Kirito and Asuna and even Suguha and Shino.
I dont know about you or anyone else, but Ive very completely understood how Kirito's character developed to what he is now.
He just started off as a normal high school child that played games just to kill his time. He had already developed a strong affection towards computers, so just before entering SAO, he thought that technology was his reality, so he kept avoiding others.
Nonetheless, it was never mentioned that he was a bad personality or something as some think.
He had always been a hurt child that wanted to escape, and when he met Asuna, comprehended the true nature of reality, understood that he should stop trying to escape and trying to live his life. Plus, we know he is quite perceptive and intellectual. As he grasped on many different things on various situations, always on a normal level. We know his background and everything. We know he an altruist and that he can become a slave of his emotions, as an average romance story protagonist. But, I think what you really misinterpret was the reason Asuna loves Kirito.
Its not that simple...We are informed later that Asuna had been living a life of a rich young girl, her parents always trying, or rather ''paying'', their best to make her an honorable descendant of their family...and he had even accepted,to a certain point, that money and all sorts of power was her goal in life. In SAO, she was confronted with the fear of dying, just because she once tried her brother's game console.
Thus, he kept trying her best to escape this nightmare of a game, resolving to take her fate into her own hands, as she had said.
While, she was struggling so much to accept the ''game'' that would possibly take her life, she met Kirito who had always been a dynamic player as he, at the beginning viewed games as his reality, totally contradicting Asuna's beliefs. As she had trouble sleeping, she used to think of him and always ended up asleep. She, then, understood that she had started to like him, which evolved into actual love as they interacted with each other.
They ended up falling in love with each other passionately, which was only possible due to them knowing each other for so much time, while working together to escape such a hazardous predicament. She just mentions them sleeping next to each other as an example, which of course surprises Kirito, as he also didnt expect her to have taken it so seriously, of how he was able to live in the ''game''.
They even dueled sometime in the story...dont know why I said that...
Kayaba hadn't forgotten his reason, he didn'ttell Kirito because: A) what he said about it being a childhood dream of his was true
B) he knew they would meet again and C) it would be a major spoiler for the Alicization arc, as he plays an fundamental role in the ending as far as I know.Actually, I find him quite interesting of an antagonist, since he is one of the few antagonists that respects, is respected by the MC but doesnt become a good guy all of a sudden.
There is no harem in SAO! Harem is all about a guy being claimed for his body by 3 or more girls.
In SAO, Kirito has girlfriend, with which he has a very serious relationship.
No girl has ever tried to bang or even provoke Kirito sexually.
Every one of them loves Kirito for what he is, thus being able to accept their unrequited love.
Its just far from being a harem, even tho it can be considered a love polygon, it just can't even be considered a harem, regardless of the anime
looking kinda, just kinda harem-ish.
Finally, I deem you might have misunderstood what actually happened during Kirito's fight with Heathcliff.
All that actually happened was that Kirito stabbed Heathcliff just after shattering into polygons, he just forced his body to move just before dying.
Well, I agree, partially tho.
However, could you just explain me what exactly you didn't like about it?
Umm yeah you have a point in all three of you statements.
A novel has to be original, interesting and harem-free (like, for reals....).
Ive written a (kind of) review on SAO.
Id recommend you check it out so you grasp on my opinion on it... http://myanimelist.net/profile/ImManLeft/reviews
Amazing review on HakoMari, youre absolutely right about everything....except that phrase you uttered at the beginning, ''In a type of media that seems to be swarming with harem, RPG SAO wannabes and bad attempts at making something different...'' Did you mean that SAO is an bad attempt of a novel, just an RPG harem for the brainless mass? Im not speaking ironically, im literally asking this question.
