Hi BalloonTwister! You had thought about it very deeply, I supposed yours was a lighthearted rating but it was not. When an artistic work struck you so deeply to identify yourself with the characters and to move something inside it's a precious thing, independently with the final rating you can give to a story. This is what art is for.

I was concerned about Shinkai because I see recurring elements in his first works, and I was concerned he cannot do anything different by "distant lovers" romances. I liked 5cm but it has some continuities with Hoshi no Koe: after watching "Beyond the Clouds" and later "Children Who Chase Lost Voices" I'm relieved.

Maybe rewatching it in a different moment of your life maybe will give to you a different perspective: I'm impressed how everyday life and experiences can interfere in enjoying a specific story and (rarely) vice-versa.
