I started off primarily as a manga reader. For some reason, people kept buying me Clamp manga and Sailor Moon volumes, so at first I wasn't too interested in the medium and had more of a casual interest in the manga and anime that were brought to the West. In the early 2000's, however, shows like Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin got me hooked on Japanese media, and I began picking up Jump titles, such as Naruto, One Piece, Gintama, Hikaru no Go, etc., to read. Eventually, I became an avid reader, expanding beyond Jump, but still staying within the shounen demographic with titles like Fullmetal and D.Gray-man.
In the past few years, I've started to watch a lot more anime and expand beyond the shonen demographic and supernatural/action/adventure genres. In my exploration, I've been watching and reading things I normally wouldn't, and some of these have turned out to be a pleasant experience.
Ratings: Having been in academia for quite a while, I've grown used to attempting to keep results to a Gaussian curve with a mean around 7. I usually score between 5 and 9. I have to dislike a series a lot for me to score it below a 4. For a 10, I either must have enjoyed it immensely, or it must have resonated with me personally for some reason.
Series I watched or read too long ago to fairly judge are left unrated. In the future, I'll probably re-rate everything according to a more structured scheme, but for now, it is what it is.
