Hey, thanks for commenting on my blog! I definitely agree with the way you described the unique aspects of the three personalities. Especially regarding L's dry humor. Without a doubt, the author created Mello and Near to resemble some aspects of L, and Near without a doubt seems to demonstrate this in his mannerisms and the way he thinks.

In regards to how you brought up Mello's cooperation in helping Near win in the end, I think it's very interesting to explore whether or not he knew he was being used by Near. I do believe Mello knew he was helping Near. It seemed that Near had a plan up his sleeve, but he was in dire need of someone who could execute this plan. Mello said "I'm the only one who could do this" and basically denied himself and went against his own will. He would never in a million years want to be use by Near and become one of his pawns, yet instead of being a pawn his move was the central piece in defeating Light.

He definitely realized that with their efforts combined, defeating Light was more plausible. Mello's participation and death definitely was an illustration of how his ultimate goal and desire in his life was to bring justice. Mello was right, only he would be able to sacrifice his life for that goal and I think this is a part of L reflected in Mello. The willingness to sacrifice yourself for your mission, because L didn't have to ever show himself to Light. Near, however, is entirely different in this respect since he would never take such risky moves. He has to oversee what happens until the end and this is the way he plays his games.

It is interesting though, to think that Near and Mello are so fixed on defeating Kira, that they will literally do whatever it takes to win. Particularly Near...have you heard of Matsuda's theory about Near? It was in the manga and I think you should take a look at it if you haven't already because I believe that if this theory is true, Near is truly a brilliant mastermind and if he did "cheat"...in my opinion that aspect of Near really sets him apart from L.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
