Oh don't worry. I didn't get a full understanding of EP 26 until I read a discussion about it, but besides that I really love it's in-depth take on politics , and how it wasn't all that easy to get hand on Yakushima due to certain constraints in the political field. You don't see much of that nowadays.
And I think 2nd GIG would be more digestible on a first watch in that regard since it's a lot more cohesive, clear-cut and straightforward, even if it includes certain political jargon , but I don't think it's absolutely necessary for understanding.
As for what actually went down in the Laughing Man arc , here's my brief understanding/analysis,
What Aoi (LM we know) apparently got a report that consisted of the defects in the micromachine therapy , which got wrongfully verified for curing Cyberbrain sclerosis which was plaguing people at that time , when Cyberization was being in-effect, pushing the more effective Murai Vaccine into the sidelines. So, on learning that Aoi kidnapped Mr.Serano to convince him to spill the beans. So, he takes him out into the open to confess it, but since Serano gave him a vague response, whether he would carry it out or not, it infuriated Aoi, making him to perform that "public stunt" , which in turn ,made that act a phenomenon, giving birth to Stand Alone Complexes, as well as the popularizing the LM icon. But, when Serano was kidnapped, Yakushima and his cohorts delivered a ransom to Serano's household at the same time, blackmailing him that he knows about the secret of ineffectiveness of his product. And after that , he also curbed their micro machine production line by releasing a micromachine killer virus. Not only did he do to the Serano Company , but also to the other micromachine companies as well. And now posing as good guys, he sent his secretary to settle down a deal with them that he can cure that incident if they make a "public donation" to the politician, which not only included the blackmailed money, but also extra funds as well. And now after they removed the virus that were plaguing their company, Yakushima released a fake information that it was all of the work of the notorious hacker , blaming Aoi , and coining the term for the first time, "The Laughing Man."
But for Yakushima, it served as a detriment since as soon as The Laughing Man news spread, many people, especially in the more underground internet communities, started to sympathize with him, and start to act by borrowing his image making their own attempts to attack the government, all calling themselves that they are the Laughing Man. This is what a Stand Alone Complex meant. A movement of individuals with no connections or under no organizational control, start acting to produce a "teamwork" effort. It's a neat, innovative construct and I loved it how it was actual given the birth. Also, yeah a SAC doesn't have an original source. Since the image of Laughing Man was after all a fabricated one released to the public , which never existed in the first place. Aoi also never called himself one, which is told to the audience repeatedly.
And about what Aoi meant in the final episode about synchronizing ourselves , we submit into the will of the 3rd party , losing our own individuality in the process. On a more generalized view, I think it criticizes the spreading of information in an Internet age. News spread fast on the social media and other sites, and there are many people who easily believes what they are seeing, without judging the credibility of the news. This is what he meant, we submit ourselves into the news and hence into the will of the party that generated the fake news (synchronizing ourselves into the will of the third party) without giving much thought to it (since individual thought-process is a recurring theme of individuality in the show. Ex:- Tachikomas). If people were able to think , then not only it would have put Yakushima into suspicion all along, but also this LM SAC movement wouldn't have occurred.
This is what actually went down in the LM arc of SAC 1st GIG. Sorry , it became a bit too long, but I described everything that's necessary, so if you still have any doubts you can ask me. :D
Art how did you feel about the last 6 EPs of the Laughing Man arc? Good thing, that you upped it's score from 8.35 to a 9 after completing it. I was about to tell you in reply to your earlier comment, about the last 6 EPs being the best, but you had already entered into the territory by then, so I left it as it is.
Artorias_ , I see that you're clearly mad binging Monster , like I did back in the time. I'm glad that you aren't finding it slow by any means, which is the often general criticism that gets laid against it, and something I clearly don't agree or at least luckily didn't experience it.
The way they wrapped up the prologue was brilliant in the manga. And how the manga depicted thorfin breakdown. I think anime has done and excellent job production wise so far especially with camera scenes and consistent quality of the non- cg stuff so far , I haven't noticed any bad CG ,I ve noticed the CG such as the ships and arrows but I think there's a difference between noticable cg and bad cg.But where it falls and it's unfortunate , is how great the manga is at drawing faces and suddens shifts, I seriously doubt when the anime reaches the point where askeladd kills the king that it would be as iconic as the manga. And the facial expressions for when askeladd hears the king refer to his mother as a slave and call him a basterd and his face with the whales invasion, I don't think anime would be able to do it with same impact.
