Growing up I remember watching Pokemon on tv and Dragon Ball Z on my dad VHS tapes. I honestly can’t remember between those two which was my first anime, but they were both what introduce me to it. Over the years I dabble in what anime I saw if they happened to play on any random channel. It wasn’t until recently I’ve gotten into anime in 2014 and since then seen a dozen or so series that make me love it even more. In general, I attempt to come across as a friendly person, but despite intentions I keep coming across as someone serious. I intend to check out other anime series old and new since there’s so much of it to enjoy and eventually loathe those awful titles. I'm open to to seeing anything...which I could see coming back to haunt me eventually.
If you happened to drop by feel free to send me a friend request if you want. Or if a review of mine made you want to check out my profile feel free to share your feedback on them. If I was worried about negative comments I wouldn’t have posted them in the first place.
Favorite Anime Intros
Number 1: Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan (1st opening)/Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (Final Opening)
Reason
For Attack On Titan I was originally going to this leave this at it’s awesome. Except that wouldn’t explain why this is my favorite anime intro (for right now). Like for most of the intros I love, it manages to squeeze story details without ruining them and gets me pumped up to see it. I also like how it’s presented like a propaganda video with the grainy filter, the huge Japanese words saying to fight, and the buildup to showing titans creating chaos before showing humans directly fighting the titans.
Number 2: Yu Yu Hakusho (1st Opening English Dub)
Reason
I kid you not the first time I heard this song and saw this intro I knew there was no way I would be able to dislike the anime. I can’t really explain why’s so endearing to me. Could be that catchy theme song which sounds better in the English dub.
Number 3: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (tie between third and forth opening)
Number 4: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (1st Opening)
Number 5: Tokyo Ghoul
Number 6: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Number 7: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (1st Opening)
Number 8: Fullmetal Alchemist (1st Opening)
Number 9: Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (2nd Opening)
Reason
Season one might have had the better story, but season two was more emotionally captivating. It further fuel me to see to the series and this opening was a bittersweet road on memory lane once I just had reached the end.
Number 10: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood
Reason
This intro has everything I love about a good opening intro. It shows story details within it and also gets me pumped up to see it with creative visuals. I also love all the comic-book effects use in it and love instead of using traditional cuts it uses pages and panels to transition. I fell in love with the opening the first time I saw it.
Favorite Opening Songs
Number 1: Linked Horizon - Guren no Yumiya (from Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan)
Number 2: Tk from Ling Tosite Sigure - Unravel (from Tokyo Ghoul)
Every version I came across had the audio altered.
Number 3: Sara White - Smile Bomb (from the English dub of Yu Yu Hakusho)
Number 4: Sukima Switch - Golden Time Lover
4NXIYkwKdt8
Number 5: Shoko Nakagawa - Sorairo Days (from Toppa Tengen Gurren Lagaan)
Number 6: Yoko Takahashi - A Cruel Angel’s Thesis (from Neon Genesis Evangelion)
Number 7: Funkist - Snow Fairy (1st opening of Fairy Tail)
Number 8: Konomi Suzuki n' Kiba of Akiba - Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaete mo Omaera ga Warui (from WataMote)
Number 9: Aya Hirano - Bouken Desho Desho (from the first season of Haruhi Suzumiya)
Number 10: Shihoko Hirata - Sky’s the Limit (from Persona 4 The Animation)
Could not find on it on YouTube.
Number 11: Hello Sleepwalkers - Goya no Machiawase (from Noragami)
Favorite Anime Outros
Number 1: Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan (2nd Outro)
Reason
One thing about director Tetsuro Araki is certain, he has come a long in closing his anime since this.
Number 2: Fullmetal Alchemist (4th Outro)
Number 3: Fullmetal Alchemist (2nd Outro)
Number 4: Fullmetal Alchemist (1 Outro)
Number 5: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (1 Outro)
Reason
It wouldn’t be Fullmetal Alchemist unless there was train tracks in the opening or closing of the anime. Besides the song, I like this outro and how it’s animated like coloring book and drawn in front of the viewers. It’s imaginative and silly.
Number 6: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (2nd Outro)
Number 7: Shinsekai Yori (1st Outro)
Favorite Ending Songs
Number 1: Maximum the Hormone - Zetsubou Billy (2nd ending from Death Note)
Number 2: Cinema Staff - Great Escape (2nd ending song from Shingeki no Kyojjin/Attack On Titan)
Number 3: Sowelu - I Will (4th ending track in Fullmetal Alchemist)
Number 4: Rie Fu - Tsuki Akari (1st ending track for Darker Than Black)
Number 5: Risa Taneda - Wareta Ringo (1st ending track from Shinsekai Yori)
Number 6: The Seatbelts - The Real Folks Blues (from Cowboy Bebop)
Number 7: Orange Range - Shiawase Neiro (1st ending track from Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2)
A Self Asked Q & A
Q. Do you intentionally write long reviews?
A. No I don’t. Before I even post a review I attempt to keep the paragraphs that are important. Unfortunately I always end up writing more than I expected too. My Darker Than Black: Ryuusei no Gemini review went over 3,000 words which tells you I got allot to learn in the editing department.
Q. Do you read your friends reviews?
A. Yes, but don’t tell them. Shhhh!
Q. What was your gateway anime?
A. Death Note is what got me to see anime more frequently. It’s also to date the quickest I’ve ever finished an anime marathoning the entire series in two days. Saying I was addicted to Death Note is an understatement.
Q. Do you prefer English dub or sub when watching an anime?
A. It can go either way for me depending on the anime. For example, I prefer the Japanese voice cast for WataMote since the dialogue is more hilarious and Izumi Kitta (who voices Tomoko Kuroki) sounds more natural. In Darker Than Black anime series it fluctuate the further it goes. In the beginning the English dub was superior, but by its second season it looses to the Japanese cast which are more consistent. My final example would be Death Note in which Braw Swaile out does Mamoru Miyano in the role of Light Yagami. Braw Swaile performance made me favor the English dub for Death Note.
Q. Is there anyone specific who makes you see an anime?
A. Yes there’s a couple people. For English dubs if Johnny Yong Bosch is casted in the lead or has a decent size supporting role I’m sold. Same goes with Patrick Seitz, except with Seitz whose role size I don’t mind. I just like hearing the guy voice. If the anime is directed by Tetsuro Araki regardless how it turns out I’ll see it. He did direct my favorite anime of all time so why wouldn’t I want to check out the rest of what he worked on. Gen Urobuchi on the writing staff. I’ve notice his usual tricks like reusing the same plot twists and occasional exposition dumping, but I manage to like his works. Considering them smart, well, that’s another discussion. Finally, if Hiroyuki Sawano is the composer it’s an immediate sell because I generally love what music he composes. If I don’t even see the anime I still get his music.
More content (maybe) coming soon. Still haven't decided what to do with this account, but might as well have one to record my anime watching history.
Hey, it's been a LONG time since we last talked! I noticed that you were the only person to review the Golden Batman movie! Expect that review to get a lot more traffic now that Kenny Lauderdale just made a Golden Bat video!
It seems you require sunglasses to bask in my glory. My apologies for being so awesome and most of all humble.
I'm doing pretty alright, besides being way too busy ever since I started working on my master thesis. I have yet to finish up the last season of anime, and there are quite a few shows I wanted to watch in winter as well. At least I'm up to date with JoJo.
I am afraid I haven't watched either of those anime. Thinking back on it I couldn't even tell you what the last non-seasonal anime I watched was... It seems you aren't in a much better situation either with your schedule.
Tell me about the fellow arsonist though! What did the girl do?
The trick that I've always used to try and get people to read my posts is to try and make an interesting hook. Varying my formula up from writing about the industry, the studio themselves (such is the case with P.A. Works), or just being a nonchalant asshole cause what I watched was utter trash. I've learned a lot from reviewing and my general style of writing, which I give credit to MAL for for giving me an outlet to let my opinion be seen by other people and develop my skill.
I'm especially grateful cause I finally got something workshopped and got a surprising amount of positive feedback in regards to my ability to write fiction. Which I honestly didn't expect because I'm a nervous wreck when it comes to my own projects (especially when you present something that's related to your 'Magnum Opus') seriously thinking "Oh god, they're gonna trash it, and I couldn't show them what a real first draft of mine looks like with a time window of 5 days writing 20 pages. Not a fun venture.
I've already shredded Beatless to bits. Both of the reviews for the 2 seasons are already up on both MAL and my Wordpress, with plans to tackle intermission a little later in explaining why it's the best thing I could ever get having watched that series. There's an art to being a just asshole in tearing a piece of media and euphoria having seen it, read it over, and enjoying your well-structured rant.
The current season for me is kind of a weird throwback to 2013, where both SAO and AoT are in their third seasons, so I'm kinda awestruck by how THIS is happening again. That and anime Romeo and Juliet, another imouto series, Bunny girl, and a continuation of Golden Kamuy is really giving me weird nostalgia. Should be a fun season, even if I'll end up shredding half of it to bits. Like usual.
Wow man, it's been a HELLUVA long time since we talked. Almost a year now. Shit... That wordpress has actually been around for a while now, about two years. Just updated the little avatar of myself just recently to refresh the front page a bit. I've been kinda lazy moving over all 283 (current) reviews that I have on MAL and polishing them up to be more presentable. I have about half done, but the archives for 2014-2016 are pretty rough and will need substantial time to fix, time that I myself don't really have. Editing the lot has been nostalgic though. Trying so hard to keep what my past self meant when I first wrote them while making them readable is a freaking trip, especially when the stuff I normally write for MAL is almost 2.5x the length I started with. I've been planning a few projects exclusively for the wordpress, but that's few and far between since I haven't put in the time yet to focus on them. That project being a Retrospect of the entire monogatari anime series (since I spent an entire month watching it), and what that show means to me and how I feel about it. Especially since 5 years ago I hate shinbou and the show, and 5 years later, I hate shinbou, love platinum disco, and am still awestruck by the all-star cast.
It also dawns on me that being in my 3rd year of college, I'm only a few short years away from being released into the real world. God that thought is scary, made even more so that I've firmly place myself in the creative field, which as you probably know is risky business to begin with. But I chug away, still writing, even thought a few times when I would eventually stop writing these anime reviews. I've been at it for 6 years; I can't keep doing this forever. Just this last season my schedule was all over the place moving back to my college, and I could hardly stay consistent with release dates for them.
Also not gonna lie...I don't remember 2017 at all. I have a habit of going back and reading old reviews sometimes just so I remember what I watched then. Things move by so fast now I can't easily remember shows unless they're one of my favorites or had an impact on me, and I have the space devoted to remembering them. Hell I don't even really hate Hand Shakers that much because my memory of it is on the OST and nothing else. That being said, fresh short term memory is a helluva thing, and finishing up Beatless was the most exhilarating experience...to write. I haven't written something that's just a pure representation of concentrated (and validated) hate and livid frustration for a show. Hell Diomedia screwed up WORSE than P.A. Works, and that's when you know the universe is outta whack.
Someday I should really get my avatar updated to a kitsune version of myself. Right now I draw my own shit, but I'm kind of a garbage artist in terms of color (and...figure), so I stick with a koha-ace version of myself drawn in my regular clothes. Though I have used this one for years, and I'm kinda attached to it, so not sure if that's the best course of action. Looks nice though; reminds me of a persona character. (Which given how one of your previous avatars was Joker (somehow I've gotten myself somewhat familiar with Persona) I'm guessing is a correlation.)
Holy that's a lot of stuff you're currently watching XD. The most I would tackle is probably around 10 anime at once. I see one of them is Bungo Stray Dogs season 2. I wasn't a fan of season 1. Felt like it meander about too much, and didn't do anything productive for most of the episodes. What job do you have?
Lol. Bungo Stray Dogs season 2 was on my list for more than a year now. I watched it when it first came out but got derailed and right now I didn't have enough interest to continue with, it was there on the list just because.
Wasn't big fan of season 1 aswell. But the major problem for me is the comedic timing, they really came out at the most inappropriate moment.
I manage to became government official specifically on Bank Analyst. The title sounds cool and it may said 'analyst' but the job just following and adjusting templates by the computer system.
My current job is working at food processing. Basically, make sure stuff like bacon is good to ship out for consumers, and make sure nothing bad gets in the product. It sucks since I'm one of the few reliable people working in the plant. Something that's infuriating since I'm primarily working who just are lazy at their job, and just don't care about their job. I could complain about them a lot. Like how the lack of organization kills me on the inside. The company also loves to make me work weekends constantly so, they're currently the biggest pain in my life. Hey, at least it pays the bills.
Haha story of my life as well. Are you the youngest? my reason got so much workload because of that.
Only say one episode of Persona 5 The Animation. Thought the first episode was ok, and didn't give me much hope the other will turn out better. Still plan on watching it. Waiting for Makoto to make become part of the main cast before watching it. I am also watching an anime called Lostorage Conflated Wixoss which is the 4th season in the WIXOSS franchise. I liked the first two seasons, but season 3 was bad. Season 4 is an improvement at the moment, but the convoluted writing is getting irritating as it goes on. I do like this one character in the series called Mizushima Kiyoi who has the best backstory in the series which keeps me watching season 4.
P5 adaptation is as expected, quite mediocre. They really love Akechi so much and as usual the pacing was rushed.
I think I only watched 2 episodes Lostorage Infected one. Didn't really care much about the series in the end to say the least. Maybe I might need check out the first season in order to understand the next installment and to see if the S1 was really that good.
Speaking of Persona, do you play other SMT Games?
I do write, but it's currently on blog. Don't get much readers on it, though I don't update frequently so complaining about it ain't justifiable on my end XD. I haven't posted anything on that blog on here because the anime stuff I did write I don't consider reviews. Their more like impression pieces where I just ramble on random things on a certain anime. Their easier to write than reviews, but I rather prefer writing reviews since I'm challenge to organize my thoughts, having to articulate them, and convey them in a way that makes sense.
any plan writing here? also how long usually it takes you to write one reviews I'd like to ask ?
Whenever possible, I'm also dabbling in writing original stories. There some stuff in the past two years that didn't take off, and had to cancel on them. Basically, I was planning on making a comic with some other people, but scheduling conflicts, and creative difference made it not worth pursuing so we stopped it. My ideas were nearly always shot down. Some of them I can understand since it conflicted with the type of story we wanted to do, but at other time it didn't. I wanted more characterization which would mean the artist would to draw more panels of characters talking, while other wanted more action which I was oppose too. Ironically, since that departure I'm the only who's trying to write a complete story of their own. The other sometime ask for my feedback, but they never send me their stuff XD.
I do plan to write stories as well. Not a comic but just a mere text book. But my main problem is myself; you know lack of motivation and the fact I was so lazy documenting any idea that popped up in my mind. The result is those idea just sliding away in few hours.
Hey, thanks for reading! I think I'm probably going to start slowing down and doing less daily posts as I try to work on the Lain series of posts, although I try to keep up some amount of prolificness. Of course, in order to get through that, I'm going to have to re-watch the show twice. So far it's been morphing into a kind of multi-media project, incorporating text, video, and audio, I'm really trying to go all out with the experimentation for that one.
I'm also really feeling that the anime being made right now isn't really super interesting. Everyone's getting all hyped about Mahou Shoujo Site and the new Steins;Gate while the only currently airing show I'm watching is a sequel to an anime from the early 70s (Lupin III Part V). Which is as of now the first Lupin show that has over an 8, something the series really should have reached a long time ago. I haven't seen WIXOSS yet, but I've been planning to watch the first season for a while now.
I feel like the info-sumping portions of Lain (the recap episode and the middle portion) were real detriments to the series. Before that point, it never spelled anything out to the views and left everything up to interpretation. That segment felt like they were just like: "This show is too complicated for some of our viewership, so let's grind to a halt and explain everything that already happened." Which is really unfortunate seeing as how great the show was at effortlessly communicating its ideas through directing and tone.
As for being stumped on writing on certain anime, I always find that if I can't say everything I want to about a series, I try and pick a relatively small thesis and expand out from there (i.e. my recent post about how Yu Yu Hakusho has my favorite tournament arc). It's a daunting task trying to say everything, for a long time it stopped me from covering a lot of shows I really wanted to talk about, but then I made a post where I attempted to say everything about FLCL and realized that sometimes it's better to focus on a small aspect of a series than the big picture, or to cover the series multiple times on different topics and eventually reach the point where there's nothing more to say. I hope that helps at all.
Business as usual but not gonna lie I have lost interest with everything anime related last year because I think I have seen all the good stuff (as you can see on my list I haven't watched many seasonal stuff starting from februari last year) but somehow I get back and also write review again. I managed to get a job so I guess bye bye teenage years. guess I have to say it's been alright here.
How about you? Also Persona 5 airing this season what do ya think so far?
Also Do you still write? Just a daily reminder that the review system here is still as sucks as our conversation years ago.
Nice to meet you too (thanks for accepting). Thanks for the link, and yeah I'm really looking forward to Darling in the FranXX, Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san, Kokkoku, and Poputepipikku. Other than that there's not really much that interests me next season. What about you? Edit: Also Citrus I suppose.
