You could say Gundam has *un*likeable characters on both sides. The most compelling leads seem to be Amaro and Char, and Amaro can be an arrogant prick at times.

There's much less character/slice-of-life focus in Gundam than Macross (except for the half episode where Amaro had his existential crisis). But the Gundam action is slightly better.

The Gundam battles are more exciting than I expected, even with 1979-80 animation. Occasionally one side makes a strange tactical decision, but overall really good stuff.

I don't like a ton of fanservice either, but I'll just make an exception if I like a show enough (Welcome to the NHK and SZS, etc.).

I like FLCL as a comedy/parody of adolescence, so something I (and other guys) can relate to in some way...:S It's a strong adolescence show, just like Utena and EVA imo.

Does Kemonozume look good? Some even like it more than Kaiba.

Well, I've heard the fanbase are basically the bronies of anime. But I see it's just your traditional stuff which I am not really fond of unless they have some sort of charm to it.

I would recommend Madoka to someone who wants a mahou shoujo. But with seeing little of both, I would agree with you due to more of how these two are highly respected mahou shoujo.

While I wouldn't hold the monster of the week formula against a pure mahou shoujo title of all things, I can understand where you're coming from in saying there still needs to be something to allow it to stand out. I haven't seen the original Precure, though I can tell you some of the later instalments probably have improved significantly. Heartcatch features some genuinely good writing, an entertaining cast and absolutely FABULOUS action sequences/transformation scenes. The show also does a great job spacing out its filler episodes with plot events and flows quite nicely. The currently airing Smile Precure is much more episodic, but it's easily the most entertaining show this year. It just knows how to execute comedy and drama so well, and best of all it can switch between the two without feeling awkward like some shows do. There's also a ton of variety in the fights, as not all of them come down to the girls just using their fists/beam spam to defeat their foes. One episode featured a quiz game, while another involved the girls having the face the bad guys in some carnival games. I'd definitely recommend checking these two seasons out at some point.

So how was Futari wa Precure? By the way, any plans to check out some of the other Precure series? I've only seen Heartcatch and half of Smile (since it's airing) but both are/were really enjoyable traditional magical girl shows for me.

What's your take on FLCL? Is it deep or just GAINAX having fun? (dunno why it took me 16 months to watch this)

Yeah, PA had more time to set up effectively, and came together with a strong conclusion. Paprika felt like even more of a mindscrew...

Kaiba was probably better than both of them, effectively exploring memories with very little confusion (trolling?).

You're right. The first Milky Holmes has a somewhat linear plotline, where the second season is more mayhem and randomness. Pani Poni and MH2 throw everything but the kitchen sink at you, there's not much setup for jokes. Just blind energy....

MH2 works better than some other sequels (like Baka Test) for some reason. Probably because it was more crazy...:)

What's your take on Paprika? It almost felt like an extended episode of Paranoia Agent. They had an original themes and an good story. (Dealing with a bunch of things, dreams, technology in general).

It probably would have been better as a series, but still pretty good...

Milky Holmes is basically Pani Poni Dash without the references...

Well the lard arc is hard to explain, it doesn't make sense like the rest of Milky Holmes...

Just finished Macross, and it really is a great show. There's a ton of things mixed together really well (war, politics, action, romance, music).

How's Gundam?

Shew! You gave me a scare there. I couldn't tell if you were the objective type that just wanted to discuss ideas or the egotistical anime-iq elitist that wanted to push his opinions on someone else. So hard to understand the tone of text sometimes...Haha.

For your last question, that is honestly what measures the success of a show in the real world. It has small ammount to do with quality. For example, Naruto is super popular and even more wide-known than death-note, but Naruto is chocked full of filler arc, plot-holes and poor character design...unlike Death Note. I suppose if you wanted to find the best anime overall, you would have to add the popularity, the quality and divide by 2. In this sense, you can see how it matters. Atleast, in my own head.

Influence on the industry in Japan...I agree with your points there. But Death Note I think just brought on a new age on mainstream content. Considering how Shonen Jump is operated, I am thoroughly impressed that they came up with such a straight-forward story to tell. There were no deviations in the experience. They had their eyes focused on the end the whole time. Not to mention the fact that it's the darkest manga ever published by SJ. Very interesting.

As far as fangirls are, you know how easy girls fall for the stereotypical "2 perfect guys" duality. Look at Twilight. Haha. And more than that, there is a lot going on, so the female mind is enraptured with thoughts on mystery and philosophy.

But honestly, man, I'm not here to debate or measure my knowledge against yours. I just want to throw in my impressions and help people that are looking for new anime to watch. I'm sure you probably know more than me anyway. I've only watched anime on a steady basis for 4 years. Before that I saw Medabots, Beyblade, Dragon Ball and Cowboy Bebop and I didn't even know those were considered anime at the time.
