Forgive the lack of warning, but it's time for my daily massacre! If you do not believe I am the real thing, take a good look at me and start freaking out!!!.
Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu / Legend of the Galactic Heroes is probably the best anime ever made. While I'm don't agree completely ( maybe I need to see it one more time or maybe Evangelion is just the better anime for me ) I will say it is the most complex piece of animation that I've seen. The story is simple ( the synopsis tells it just fine ) and straight foreward with no wtf / omfg twists like in most anime. Its a straight war and political drama focused on dialogue and the actions of the commanders / leaders rather than the battles and the action itself. The characters are so many and yet the author managed to keep all of them relevant / interesting. And speaking of characters, the series contains some of the best in all the anime / manga medium.
Some compare it to Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace ( maybe they compare the the two for what they represent in their distinctive mediums, in which case it makes sense ).
All in all, I can't recommend it enough. Just go for it and if you like it great and if not then at least you tried.
P.S. In case you're interested in space operas with more action, try Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199, The Original ( 1979 ) Gundam Movie Compilation ( 3 x movies ) + Gundam War in the Pocket + 8th MS Team + Zeta Gundam and the new Gundam: The Origin. There is also Macross ( 1983 ) a very good space opera and one of the best romance and romance triangle stories I've seen.
True, the teacher was really suspicious from the start, I also kinda thought that the yellow hair kid had something to do with it as well, like maybe helping out with the murders and kidnappings.
