My ratings:
- 10 - Masterpiece. I feel I've grown as a person from watching this, one of the most influential media I've consumed (shows/anime/books/other).
- 9 - Top-tier anime with unusually superb execution. Could easily give it a re-watch (and probably have) for hidden gems.
- 8 - Great anime. Maybe it has one of two very minor flaws but it was one of the better shows I've got to watch, time very well spent.
- 7 - A good anime I've enjoyed, but probably would not re-watch. Had at least one glaring flaw.
- 6 - A mediocre anime with serious issues that prevented me from enjoying it because it kept showing up. A glaring plot hole, severe pacing issues, etc. that break the immersion of the show (even if it had other redeeming qualities)
- 5 and below - trash tier.
Everything I gave 8+ I strongly recommend. Everything that is 9+ is a must-watch in my eyes.
Shows I recommend despite not giving the first\all season a high mark - they are GREAT if you are the target audience.
1. Monogatari (first entry Bakemonogatari). It's not for everyone, but it really picks up and "season 2" is a gem. It has a lot of great seasons along the way, and the movies are great too.
2. Machikado Mazoku - A great CGDCT (Cute Girls Doing Cute Things) show. It's not groundbreaking by any means, but if you like this specific genre then this is one of the best in it.
3. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - A very good entry for the horror/thriller genre with some fun slice of life and childish comedy mixed in. Really complex plot derived from its VN roots. There was a reboot recently (2021) so maybe check that out too.
4. Kill La Kill - An over-over-over-the-top magical girl anime where getting buck naked and fanservice ARE the plot. If you want a thrill and craziness this show gives it to you in droves.
5. Bunny Girl Senpai - An interesting Bakemonogatari clone. If I'd have never watched Monogatari series first I would have ranked it way higher. On its own it's still a very solid show, and doesn't have the jarring, crazy editing of monogatari (which I like, but is really a matter of personal taste). It's the polished mass version of it - and it does its job well.
