I generally search for anime with a psychological, comical, futuristic, magical, supernatural, adventure and/or sometimes romantic aspect. Usually I prefer anime an anime over it's manga; mainly since I'm an auditory learner, but also because I think it displays the emotions, tone, and body language much better. That way the story seem more real, at least to me, although manga does seem to give a clearer description of the characters' thoughts. Finally, I judge anime/manga highly on its' ending. If the anime is great with a horrible ending, or terrible with a wonderful ending; it can affect the score I give it by 1-2 points.
