My rating system:
10 - Masterpiece: Flawless, unforgettable, emotionally impactful, and ground-breaking. This is the pinnacle of storytelling and execution in anime. A must-watch for anyone, even for non-anime lovers. It doesn’t mean it’s without flaws, but the overall experience is so exceptional that any imperfections are negligible. These are the rare gems that can leave a lifelong impression.
9 - Excellent: Outstanding with only minor flaws that are easily overlooked or forgotten. It stands out as a high-calibre work in its genre or even across genres. Highly entertaining and emotionally impactful, this type of anime keeps you hooked and lingers in your mind long after it’s over. It’s not quite perfect but comes very close.
8 - Very Good: Solid and enjoyable, with some flaws or unremarkable moments that hold it back from greatness. While it may not redefine the genre, it’s consistently well-executed and reliable. These shows excel at what they set out to do and can easily be recommended to fans of the genre or anyone looking for quality entertainment.
7 - Good: Competent and enjoyable, but it lacks depth or is held back by noticeable flaws. While not ground-breaking, it delivers a pleasant experience and may have standout moments. These are great for genre fans but might feel lacklustre for viewers looking for something extraordinary. Often, these shows are satisfying in the moment but not particularly memorable in the long run.
6 - Fine: Pleasant but inconsistent, with noticeable shortcomings that make it difficult to fully engage with. It might have a few standout moments or ideas, but they’re surrounded by mediocrity. These shows are best suited for casual or one-time viewing, as they often lack the appeal to warrant a rewatch. It’s not bad, but it’s not particularly good either.
5 - Mediocre: Watchable but uninspired. These shows have as many drawbacks as strengths, often feeling like they’re coasting on potential rather than delivering a satisfying experience. They might entertain briefly but fail to leave an impression. At this level, the anime feels forgettable, as if it’s missing the spark that makes stories truly engaging.
4 - Below Average: At this rating and below, I start questioning why I’m even watching it. Weak, with flaws that significantly detract from the experience. The story, characters, or execution might fail to connect, leaving the viewer disengaged. It may have moments of competence, but they’re overshadowed by the frequent missteps or mediocrity.
3 - Disliked: Disappointing or frustrating, with few redeeming qualities. The flaws are glaring, whether in storytelling, pacing, character development, or animation. Watching it feels more like a chore than entertainment. These are the shows that provoke feelings of regret for investing time in them.
2 - Strong Dislike: Actively unpleasant, tedious, or nonsensical. These shows are riddled with glaring issues that make them difficult to sit through. The execution may be lazy, incoherent, or outright baffling. At this level, even small positives are outweighed by the overwhelming negatives, leaving little reason to recommend it to anyone.
1 - Appalling: Utter failure in all aspects, memorable for the wrong reasons. This is the lowest of the low—a disaster in storytelling, visuals, and execution. Watching it feels painful, as if every element is working against the viewer’s enjoyment. It’s hard to believe these shows were greenlit, let alone finished. Truly a test of endurance for anyone who attempts to sit through it.
