Hey, everyone. I'm nothing too interesting, just a fan of anime.
PAGE:
Since I found out I can write reviews here, I am gradually moving all of the reviews from my blog to this website. I will also try to make them more concise, as they were all originally very long.
I also wanted to say something about my MAL anime/manga rating system.
I award tens very sparingly. Actually, I'm not even generous with nines. In order to receive a ten from me, the series/movie has to be near flawless. I say near, because I think it's fair to say that no show is perfect. In order to receive a nine, the show has to be one of my favorites, but still allowed more leniency than the shows that are given tens.
On the same hand, it's also rare that I will award an anime with a three, or lower, unless I absolutely hated it.
Everything else is somewhere in between. Most of the anime on my list falls somewhere from an eight to a five. If I like the show, it will get an eight or seven, depending on how much. If I thought it was slightly above average, I'll give it a six. If I found nothing special about it, it will get a five. And if I think it's slightly below average, then it will receive a four.
HISTORY:
I was six years old when I watched my first anime--the English dubbed Sailor Moon. At the time I just thought of it as any other cartoon, other than the fact that it was my favorite. It was a unique show about female superheroes, why wouldn't I enjoy it? It only aired while school was in session, so during summer breaks, and while I was home sick this show (along with Power Rangers) was something I had to look forward to.
It was not until my sixth grade year that Alaina, friend of mine, explained what anime was since I was obsessed with Pokemon. Mind you this was 1999, the era when Pokemon was extremely popular in America. However, she introduced me to other titles, and had a love for my favorite childhood anime, Sailor Moon.
Having figured out from Alaina that Sailor Moon aired on Cartoon Network during a programming block called Toonami, I decided to start watching. The only problem? Sailor Moon came on the same time as Pokemon, so I only watched the former when it was an episode of the latter I wasn't too fond of.
By February of 2000, my interest for Pokemon had waned, and I was still able to view it on Saturday mornings, leaving my weekdays free to watch Sailor Moon. Through Toonami I was able to experience other anime, some I like (Dragonball Z), and others not so much (Gundam Wing).
My junior year of high school, a few ambitious students encouraged a teacher to sponsor/advise the anime club. Among others who enjoyed Japanese animation, we watched several other series. Unfortunately this included Fruits Basket, which became the staple show, one I didn't care for at all. Eventually the club turned into a Magic the Gathering social, so by the middle of senior year, I had unofficially quit, returning to Cartoon Network for anime.
In college I joined the anime club on campus. We would watch on average four shows during each meeting. Some caught my interest, and others not so much. The officers did their best to include a variety of genres. However, by the end of my junior and throughout my senior year, other things became of more importance. For instance: classes, the final project for Cognitive, writing and producing two plays, the cabarets, work, apartment hunting, church, practicum, and hanging out with my two besties to name a few.
It was not until October of 2010 that I started watching anime again thanks to Youtube. I wanted to go back to the familiar, watching Dragonball Z from the beginning (in addition to the abridged series). From there I rewatched another favorite from my past, Yu Yu Hakusho. Afterwards I watched Ouran High School Host Club, a series I watched in the college anime club, but only a few episodes before I stared skipping meetings in favor of completing class assignments. From then on I watched other titles, including Death Note, which until this day is still my favorite anime, and one of two that has received a perfect 10 from me on this site.
It has been a long road, but here I am. Through this site I learn about new anime, or look up information for ones recommended to me by Youtube, that I am not familiar with.
