The ending in specific is a direct comparison to shounen main characters getting a direct power-up due to some kind of loss. Which tends to be a big cliche in shounen. This is used to show his loss of humanity that he gained from Togame throughout the show and to show you how quickly the show would have ended if he didn't care about himself. How pointless it all would have been had he just not started caring for Togame and used his original power, but it ends up only happening because of that loss and is quite destructive. Rather than be the super overpowered power-up that saves the day it is something that devalues the entire show and is done so to poke fun of shounen standard power-ups.
This whole thing also showcases how his character did develop because I admit he was very inhuman at the start of the show, but by the end up until loss of Togame he really was a whole new person and it was her that changed him, even if she was only doing it for partially selfish reasons. It is this in her character that leads to their downfall. They both had a real connection but she was still partially using him. Which makes her character very complex throughout the show. I both hated and loved her from the start. She clearly had chemistry with Shichika, but she was also using him for revenge.
I can go on for a while longer about some more stuff but I will let you get some words in. I think the problem with discussing on MAL is the huge gaps in between conversation so if you have some other complaints or questions I might be able to answer. I won't be trying to change your opinion but I always enjoy a new perspective so I hope you at least gain something from this conversation XD. Thanks for being super open to discussion though :D
The tdlr of what would be a several paragraph explanation is that the show is a subversion of shounen. I tend to play off like one most of the time while constantly making fun of it. The last episode itself is basically mocking most shounen. Which tend to be these gratifying shows with huge idealistic goals that they tend to reach in the end. So Katanagatari literally slaps the viewer in the face and takes it away showing that hard work won't always succeed. It also has aspects of why revenge is a terrible thing to go for and very self-destructive. I could literally write several paragraphs but it would just turn into a flame war on both sides I feel. Most of the debates I have had on MAL turn into people just telling me uh no you are wrong and dumb XD
Fudge the tdlr was even a whole paragraph xD
