anime/manga review: ALWAYS SPOILER-FREE, unless warned otherwise
highly prefer subs over dub.
Not a fan of Mech genre
I don't comment much on Animation quality/ Studio background unless it's blatantly bad or significantly impressive
usually judge on story/plot/soundtrack. Entertainment > Conscious message.
I think my scores have validity in that the difference I have towards each score number is clear. When many reviewers think a series is "good," they debate over 8, 9, or 10 and the score gets arbitrary at that point. I on the other hand have very specific requirements that warrant the difference between an 8, 9, or a 10.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MY GENERAL GRADING SCALE (6-10). THESE ARE NOT IRON-CLAD, BUT MY REVIEWS CLOSELY FOLLOW THIS CONVENTION.
1-6:
I'll only give a 6 but to me, these are the same scores. I don't write reviews for these because to me, it's a waste of time debating how much worse something was compared to another bad series/movies. These are series that I don't recommend and wish I didn't see because the thought that I could've engaged in something more interesting comes to mind when I finish a 6 project. Usually, a blend of a complete lack of plot, blatant unoriginality, and overall boring and illogical atmosphere will warrant a 6.
7:
Ultimately, I would "recommend" this series but very reluctantly.
A "7" series' means:
-perhaps a memorable scene or two but no re-watch value of any whole episode
-multiple major problems usually in story/character development
-no regret in watching it, but FOMO was the only driver that convinced me to watch the series and I would've been fine never having watched this.
8:
This series is usually either has respectable status (classics, Ghbli, etc) or popularity (Death note). Most of the time popularity isn't unwarranted so I do try to understand and pay attention and maybe figure out why it's so appealing. It does have a re-watch value every so often and certainly has potential for others to find it more enjoyable so I recommend it. However, it's ultimately an 8 if I personally barely found it enjoyable. Remember, status of being a classic or a game changer shouldn't affect an objective review of a series which should focus on story/character/music. Neither should popular qualities like "feels" or "epicness" or "deconstruction." The quality of a series doesn't really depend on how much you cried or how bad you felt about not crying in my opinion.
Ultimately, an "8" series is something I find overrated or misjudged due to the qualities I mentioned above that might bias the review.
9:
The difference between 8 and 9: personal enjoyment, which I think is the critical factor a "personal opinion." I should feel that the series excel within that particular genre and has some significant re-watch value. I usually have a lot of things to say about a "9" series and writing its analysis feels like a hobby more than a chore for it came very natural to me while I was watching. Rarely, I come across a series where I had so much fun that it supersedes the requirement for it to have a lot to talk about (No game no life, FMP fumoffu). Remember that there many things that (not determine) must be considered when looking a series or a film:
-it's status/influence/popularity among the community
-story/character/music
-"anime" qualities that make this medium unique
-relative comparison to other notable series
-themes and messages it delivers
-enjoyment
10:
this is by definition a masterpiece. Therefore, it should hold all the qualities in 9 except perhaps even more enhanced. Personal enjoyment is a big factor and I should find about 80-90% of the series enjoyable--a particularly emotional scene, a mind-blowing twist/climax, or a particularly well thought-out character ALONE isn't enough to warrant a series a 10. An amazing achievement in a certain aspect of anime can move up to a 9, but if I didn't find the holistic series stellar, it will never be a 10. It should have quintessential anime qualities in that I wouldn't be able to imagine this being done better in live action films. These are series or films I deem not necessarily a "gateway" anime, but everything that I enjoy about and everything that encompasses a definition of anime. A live action film/tv show watcher should be able to see the series and have a new perspective on what visual medium of anime can still achieve beyond live action medium.
I encourage other reviewers including myself to not be too concerned with helpful/unhelpful ratio. While there are people who genuinely want you to improve, there are also youngins and stans who'll just dislike your opinion because you didn't give a 10 to their favorite anime. I'm sure if you put your honest opinion and stay true to how you feel, people will find it helpful regardless of numbers. But I do appreciate and encourage constructive feedbacks.

Personally, I wish people wouldn't undermine any anime, but there's always people out there. I enjoy every anime I watch in its own way-even if the story is not original.
I don't think my comment was truly what I think. Now that I look back at it, you've got a nice opinion. I'm still new, so was in the wrong thinking that all reviews have to suggest the anime to people. :P
Sure, if you embrace it, anything would be enjoyable but you can't force yourself to embrace something. I feel that is vague excuse to convince people that a work is good if you tell them to just "embrace" it.
Modern shows just have better animation. There were sci-fi shows like stein in the past.
Psycho pass is recent and that is gritty. Sci-fi shows were varied in style in the past and they still are now. I might be misinterpreting what you are saying, though.
There are a lot of anime and they are about a lot of things.
The only logical similarity is they are all animated.
I just rewatched GOTF on the day I wrote on your wall as it aired on French TV and I, too, feel empathy for the kids most of all.
Takahata seems to be a a weird guy. He makes inspiring movies but is pretty old fashioned in his views of modern Japan.
This is what is believed in the West. However, Takahata declared: "[The film] is not at all an anti-war anime and contains absolutely no such message."
BTW: Feliz Ano Nuevo
