Now, all of that said, i had a HUGE FUCKING problem with the second half of Ubw, and that was Emiya Shirou, Boyyyy did i hate that kid. Like seriously his philosophy of hero of justice and saving everyone made my eyes roll so hard, it felt like i was watching a crappy shonen. Especially coming right out of Fate/Zero. with a really fleshed out anti hero lead, Emiya Kiritsugu, shirou felt such a downgrade. The constant blabbering between him and Archer bored me to death, like i get it, shirou has this ideology of justice and it doesnt really matter if it was his or not, but i really wanted the writers to make the effort for him to earn it and can we please not shove it down our throat every 5 min, give shirou more of a inner struggle to really sell the motivation because you never genuinely feel it. Plus i completely agreed with every word archer said, it made complete sense and Shirou could literally see what the end result of his future self would be. Then finally when they both started fighting and i prayed Archer just murders him, that fucking basterd just kept getting stronger every 10 seconds. Archer said something like there are some mages that have the ability to get stronger the more they fight. Excuse me but how and when shirou got that ability? Plus Archer had so many chances to kill him but no he missed every single time, he could have easily killed him back at the temple when caster was first introduced. I know he was subconsciously holding back but that just ruins the character immersion.
Now there were other minor issues with ubw, they did my boy Kirei dirty, he was such a good villain in Zero and he just died like that. He commanded Lancer to kill himself right so why didnt he do that? Almost everyone forgot about Sakura and how shinji was abusing her in the early ep cause fuck she has her own route for that. Saber( and almost anyone from Fate/Zero) were huge downgrades from the prequel, the whole arc of saber trying to rewrite her guilty past was forgotten and now we have a legendary warrior whose only purpose is to become shirou's sword. Gilgamesh, while a nice villain, didnt had the same level of depth kirei had in Zero, infact i would say Gil was a much better and engaging character in Zero than here, but he was still pretty cool. Shirou not finding out Kiritsugu's true past and Illyasveil being so wasted was another bummer.
Many of these issues i had, were to my surprise, resolved in HF. Shirou dumped his stupid ideology after a pretty good inner struggle and character developement, There were no exposition dumps or heavy monolouges every 5 minutes. I actually ended up liking Shirou in heavens feel, can you believe that lmao. We had more of Kirei as a villains and he was pretty good, while Saber was again wasted, she still served as a great tool for shirou for developement, like when shirou killed her, that felt earned and Ubw could never do that. Most of storylines started in zero finally got resolved. Emiya and Illyasveil came to terms with Kiritsugu's past and also with each other, there relationship was one of the highlights of HF. I also liked rider a lot. But perhaps the biggest plus point for me in HF was the female lead, Sakura Matou. While i liked Rin in ubw, she was your average likable tsundere high school girl. Sakura on the other hand was a complete opposite. She was a really flawed and twisted character. The way the movies explored her dark side through the use of emotions like jealousy and lust was pretty refreshing. You dont often see the main heroine masturbating on screen calling our mc's name. Now while some might say those sexual scenes were unnecessary, i have to disagree. That was some great character building, we see how much darkness lurkes inside her, and how much she struggles. The dream sequence in Lost butterly where she imagines herself as a disney princess and pops the monsters to find candy where in actually she was getting cut to pieces by gilgamesh was pretty darn impressive. The beautiful rain scene between her and shirou and the sex scene really helps the viewer understand how just how much sakura means to shirou, Or otherwise it would have been the same mistake like ubw, where he tried to childishly try to save everyone and here he would have killed everyone for her sake even though it wouldnt have been the right thing to do and lot more peope could have been saved, but we really understand that sakura is the most important to her and he doesnt give shit about other. Matou zouken was also pretty good villain, and the ending while a little confusing, was 4really emotionally satisfying. Ofcourse HF had flaws too, and i dont know what or how much they cut out,but i found it much better than Ubw ( though i still prefer Zero over both lol).
Ok thats it lmao, i might have gone overboard with the critique but seeing how Zero and HF dealt with majority of my problems makes me go a little harder on Ubw, i still think ubw had the best fight scenes out of all fate, the cinematography and music was awesome( brave shine was a banger) and Archer and Rin were pretty good character, i still enjoyed the whole fate series a lot. I was planning on playiny the Vn but ITS SO GODDAMN LONG lmao, so i ended up starting another chronologically messed up series, The Monogatari series lmao. Thats it for me and sorry if its a little long.
Edit: Holy Shit i didnt even realise how much i wrote lmao really sorry
