No, I was reminded of the scarabs from the Mummy as 'mushi' does literally mean 'bug' and you mentioned a lot of cutting (which I don't quite remember as much from Mushishi). Just make sure not to grab the String in the Sky if you see one. :P
Haha, glad to hear positive feedback on the wonderful adventures of Ginko-san in the "magical" reality of Mushi no Sekai! :P
Honestly, (pulling on the fiction created in that world) there's such a gigantic population of mushi that I think it was necessary to choose/create/tell-about mushi that could actually make some sort of impact on human lives. And scarabs still scare the crap out of me more so than most of the mushi and that involves the voluntary desire to cut yourself...:P
But, Mushishi really was a story of awesome; it's really great that they could wind together such an imaginative world like that. :)
And, no, I'm not working on Wave though I do know two interns in the BOLD Practicum who are. I'm working on the Writely team for Google Docs (i.e, the Document portion of Google Docs rather than Presentation or Spreadsheet). Look out for some exciting new features coming out soon! :)
