I got into anime because of the depth and emotion that is poured into the storylines. As well as that, the animation demands so much imagination compared to CGI or live action and as a result is often visually stunning! The first anime I ever watched was
Evangelion and it changed the way I viewed everything. So basically, I was hooked.

The
Neon Genesis Evangelion cult/franchise is based on perfect timing, well researched psychology and symbolism. Following the series NGE which received a large and mixed reception, End of Evangelion was released. This marked a move from the well treaded grounds of psychology and philosophy to the shock and awe of a film almost entirely unreal and macabre.
End of Evangelion is based on the cult of Alchemy. Freudian psychoanalysis would argue in favour of the Oedipus complex but this only glances on the surface. Ikari Yui/Ayanami Rei are merely one of many alchemic devices involved in Shinji's (and humanity's) rebirth. And notice in Lilith and LCL the duality of red and white. With its potent symbolism, EoE is a little seedling germinated in your head with every rewatch. The creators of this film are probably among the most prolific experimenters in the world of animated literature.

On the surface watching anime is like reading a novel. But down below, deep down, there's this gut feeling that the Japanese zeitgeist lives and flows, like a torrent of Shinto spirit.

Then it was "OMG I FINALLY GET EVERYTHING NOW"
I actually watched EoE back in 2004 when I was a fledgling otaku and I didn't know that a series preceded it. I was very confused. Kinda like, "Um, why is everyone turning into orange juice? What's with that girl turning into a giant?" Now that I've seen the series and EoE, I understand and really really like both. :3
oh, Donnie Darko is the most awesome movie ever :D
BTW, accepted :D
Sweat Punch, awesome OVA collection.
Inaka Isha, short movie based in a Kafka's tale.
Petshop of Horrors, god bless the oldschool.
Mnemosyne, if you're not offended with some yuri everywhere (it's not a hentai ova, you'll understand when you start watching it)
Persona -Trinity Soul-, based @ the game for the PS2.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (and Kai), awesome anime.
Ergo Proxy, pos-apocalyptical "pseudo-phylosophycal" sci-fi.
Kurozuka, asian vampires more badassed than ever. Feudal, present-day and pos-apocalyptical.
Alien Nine, short story about child abuse told in a strange way.
Gankutsuou, the count of montecristo goes steampunk.
SZS = Black comedy. It has phylosophy, psychology and dark themes indeed, but they're mostly doing their work in the middle of the hurricane named parody.
GITS = Tactical action with some goddamn awesome phylosophyc and psychological and themes in the middle of a cyberpunk world. Mechanical chess with brains.
FLCL = Never watched. Someday, maybe! :D
