I hope you come back one day even if it's just casually. I've actually found myself enjoying some shows I'd never thought I'd enjoy again here and there and it's been pleasant
You're welcome, and I'm glad that on some level, it made for a story of sorts. Luckily most of the people I talk to I also interact with on Discord and some on AniList (which blew up a fair deal after the MALpocalypse of mid-2018), especially those who left MAL for a long time.
Mods have also started largely cracking down on ironic/sarcastic reviews on MAL now
Thanks! Glad you're back as well, and yeah, COVID has been something of a pain in the gonads for everyone.
After the great MALpocalypse of 2018 where the site was actually, completely down for a while and had to slowly restore its features over the course of months, some things happened. Actually, by 2018, we were already starting to see a lot of the more well-known and competent reviewers like LIQ, Zeph, etc. quit reviewing entirely and some even left MAL (funny enough, you came back the day after Zeph momentarily returned after over a year). There are very few reviewers I read the work of nowadays, and even Ando hasn't reviewed anything since the end of 2019.
Seasonal reviews are basically a rat race where people publish reviews as soon as the finale drops, usually before subs even come out. Hell, there's a loophole regarding the "finished airing" status where it will switch from "airing" to "finished airing" 12 hours before the finale actually drops. People started exploiting this in early 2018 and there's been constant combatting of this issue since. That was a major reason behind many reviewers' disillusionment with the review climate, as now more than ever, you're rewarded for posting quickly than posting something good unless you have the MAL clout (I can't believe I just said that) of ZephSilver or RebelPanda. Just about everyone else gets buried.
"Anti-elitist"/paradoxically elitist anti-reviewer rhetoric from the likes of Johan feel more prevalent than they did back in 2017. The site has transferred ownership several times and is prone to 504 timeout errors where MAL goes down, DDoS attacks where MAL goes down, and 501 errors where MAL goes down. MAL tends to go down at least a few times a month for anywhere spanning a few minutes to a few hours.
There was also that one time we caught a serial plagiarist and got a bunch of his reviews deleted from the website before he torched his profile before leaving the site entirely, and one of the guys I let in on the whole ordeal made a forum post calling out said plagiarist. That's a fun story on its own involving 4 friends of mine.
I'm halfway through college and COVID + my mental state throughout the first half of 2020 notwithstanding (it was about as bad as late 2017-early 2018), I'm in a much better place, emotionally. I have a part-time job, a section editing gig for my college newspaper, and a girlfriend now. Majoring in Creative Writing and Minoring in Film. Thanks for asking.

Glad to know things have been well.
