I really enjoy watching retro OVAs, even if I don't always give them high scores. I legitimately love Cyber City, Gunsmith Cats, Mezzo Forte, etc. Then you have stuff like Angel Cop, which is a pretty bad anime all around. There are individual scenes that are hilarious, but if you watch the whole thing most people wouldn't think it's worth the time investment. I'm saying this because I bought Angel Cop on Bluray and forced all my offline friends to watch it. Most of them resented me for it. I've seen that OVA I believe 6 times now. The top review gives it a 9 and talks about how gore hounds will love it and because this dude is edgy, talks about how based and redpilled Angel Cop is for "Naming the Jew". However, I don't think this is an honest rating. Even if you were a Neo-Nazi who LOVED old school gore, I still wouldn't recommend Angel Cop because most of the 3 hours is actually boring, poorly written exposition and long panning shots with the worst synthesizer track in the world playing. I honestly believe a rating of 2 or 3 is fair for that particular show.
Ultimately my ratings are subjective and heavily based on my own personal experience. Otherwise I wouldn't have Elfen Lied as my favorite anime. However, I also do try to look at some objective factors and whether or not I think others would think the time investment is worth it. I was definitely too harsh on Violence Jack 1-3, but with other OVAs like Genocyber I basically still have the same viewpoint. One review I want to re-write is for Mad Bull 34, which is hands down my favorite guilty pleasure anime of all time. I've seen Mad Bull in its entirety 7 times and it was funny every time.
