I rate based on impact, enjoyment, memorability, attachment, overall experience, immersion and finally critical merit i.e. substance. Most of the above hinge heavily on the quality of the story in question but characters in particular play a vital role in my rating system. In many cases, they could make or break a work for me. Take the following words LITERALLY. They're not meant to be used loosely. When I use a word below to describe a rating, it means exactly that. There are some exceptions but that's usually due to my personal experience or it's a guilty pleasure. Also, ratings need not necessarily always correlate to my favorites.
10/10 - Masterpiece
9/10 - Exceptional
8/10 - Excellent/Great
--------------------------------------------------------------------
7/10 - Very Good/Solid -------> [I would readily recommend everything with a 7+ rating dependent on tastes.]
6/10 - Good -------> [I would recommend series' with a 6 rating dependent on tastes. These are still worth watching. This is the rating wherein I am satisfied with my watch and there's something to appreciate.]
--------------------------------------------------------------------
5/10 - Decent -------> [The region wherein a series just manages to stay on the right side of the spectrum. Still manages to provide something enjoyable.]
--------------------------------------------------------------------
4/10 - Mediocre ------> [Just manages to be worthwhile somehow. The last gasp so to speak.]
--------------------------------------------------------------------
3/10 - Poor ------> [Beginning of the territory of disaster.]
2/10 - Horrendous
1/10 - The Holy Grail
*Note:- Don't let the large amount of 1's bother you. A vast majority of them are shitty OVAs and specials that no one would bother watching. I assure you that there aren't that many legitimate series on there. I do admit that there are some that don't really deserve 1's but I have special reasons for those instances (Mostly to do with my own problems and experiences with the series). If one goes through the list properly, you'll get what I mean.
** I use pretty much the same system for Manga, Anime, Films, TV Shows and Visual Novels. I do take art into consideration as well when it comes to manga. Also, I rate H-manga and H-anime [In Subsidiary Profile] with a completely different set of standards.
I dropped Oshi no Ko's manga score down to a 6, after sitting on it for more than a week. I think the ending really left a bitter taste in my mouth, after all. I hope that the anime adaptation will improve on the manga's ending, because the work deserves at least a 7 if not for that unsatisfying ending.
That's what I'll have to do. The manga up until the first 100 chapters, was a solid 8/10 for me. Then, it kinda fell off a bit, but the last arc showed a lot of promise... only to fail to deliver a satisfying ending when all is said and done. It's a tough work to rate, honestly.
Yes, that's exactly it. The ending could've been much better had there been more lead-up. I'm on the fence about giving it a 7 or a 6, actually. Leaning towards a 7 mostly because of my bias for the series' main characters, but the rushed ending does make me waver towards dropping the score down.
Great to hear that about the movie. And hearing that about Chii makes me want to see her in the anime, if we ever get an adaptation of the Moto Takagi-san manga.
Without going into too much detail,
the protagonist basically pulled a Lelouch Zero Requiem on us at the last minute. I don't think this was foreshadowed all that well, and many people seem to share the same opinion from reading the forum discussions. It does fit the theme of the story, though, so in that aspect I can see why the author chose a bittersweet ending over an "everyone lived happily ever after" one. The way it was executed could use some work, however, as I didn't feel as sad about it as I probably should. Certainly, it didn't have the same emotional impact as Zero Requiem did at the end of Code Geass R2.
I've seen pictures of a child looking like Nishikata's and Takagi's daughter, but I haven't done any research to confirm whether it's canon or fanfiction, lol. Nice to know that it's real. The daughter must be a cutie from the sounds of it.
I don't recall if the anime ever showed that. I have no recollection of it, anyway, so probably not.
Yeah. Both Dandadan and Blue Box also have incredibly catchy opening songs. :)
In other news, Oshi no Ko's manga finally ended a few days ago. It has a controversial ending, one that I personally did not see coming. I think it could've been executed better, but overall I'd recommend the series.
Sounds good, man. I'll check out both of those shows when I feel like it in the future. :)
Wow. That's interesting. Are Takagi and Nishikata all grown up in the movie? I always thought the story would only take place during their middle school years.
Also, the latest episodes for Dandadan and Blue Box have been pure fire! I mean, I expected Blue Box to be right up my alley from the beginning, but didn't think that I'd end up enjoying Dandadan just as much over the last couple of weeks. It's a nice feeling when a new anime can surprise me like this.
That sounds like a wonderful story indeed. Thanks for that synopsis.
Interesting facts about GetBackers. I think I watched the first episode of it way back in early 2010's, and somehow put it on-hold because I was watching too many seasonal shows at the time. I may go back and give it another try in the future after hearing what you had to say about it. I do remember liking Ban in the first episode; he seemed to be a badass.
Appreciate your input on Detective School Q, as well. Now that's a show that I've never even heard of until you brought it up. May give it a watch if I'm ever in the mood.
Oh, cool. Hopefully, it'll be a fun watch for you. :)
Good. You have so many shows to look forward to. :)
I see. That sounds like a great show. Glad you had a nice time with it.
That's such a cool coincidence! We've known each other for so many years now, but we've never really talked about English dubs. Not to my knowledge, at least. Out of those shows you mentioned, I've only watched some parts of the English dub for Death Note, Kanon, Clannad, Monster, and Code Geass, all because I really enjoyed those shows in the Japanese version and wanted to see how good the English voices were. All of them had good or great English dubs, honestly. The only one I wasn't too fond of was Kanon's, because Nayuki's voice just didn't fit her character all that well for me. The rest of the cast were good, though. I've never watched GetBackers. Is it any good?
Yeah. I've been a fan of Takahashi Rie's voice casting in various anime in the last few years. She did a great job with Megumin (Konosuba) and Emilia (Re:Zero).
Haha. I understand how it is. There are just too many potentially good shows out there for us to keep track of.
Ah, cool. That is a huge disparity between the source material and the adaptation. I'm surprised that the adaptation is scored so much higher than the source, as it's usually the other way around.
Makes sense. I also started my anime journey in middle school with dubbed shows, like, Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, and Inuyasha. Ironically, all of those shows have stellar English dubs that exceed the Japanese voices, in my opinion. Yes. I find it a bit funny that Kaoru has the same voice as Takagi, haha. Their personalities couldn't be any further apart.
True. I'm glad I didn't read the manga several years ago after completing the One-Shot, because it's a great feeling to experience the story for the first time through the anime.
Oh, that's nice. Haven't heard of that one. Is it a rom-com?
Haha, very true. Yeah, I agree. I never liked the original's Japanese cast. Kenshin sounding like a woman just doesn't fit his character, in my book, so it's nice that he's voiced by a dude in the remake. And Kaoru sounds much cuter in the remake, too, thanks to Takahashi Rie.
Yeah. I have no reasons to doubt it considering how well it's been handled thus far. :)
Oh, that's cool. Do let me know how the live-action version is, if you happen to watch it first.
Right. It's not like music alone will make or break a show. The voice acting in the remake has been really nice, and I honestly prefer it over the original Japanese cast.
Nice to hear that. Both Blue Box and Dandadan are at least a 7/10 on my rating scale, with Blue Box having potential for an 8/10 if the romance aspect is handled well.
Me too. Can't get enough of comfy rom-coms, haha.
Yes. The music is the only major complaint I have with the remake. Everything else about it is good. They kept the joke that Saitou somehow has a wife, by the way. Lol.

Another banger episode for Dandadan this week, by the way. :)
