I wasn't a big fan of Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann at first either. It wasn't until about episode 7-8 where that thing happens that I really felt the series could actually go somewhere. After the Spiral King arc I really didn't know which directions the series would take but it really surprised me how it went from such a fun loving over the top story to something much deeper. In retrospect the depth of the series was always there we the view just needed to actually look a little deeper. Now I am not asking you to change your view on the series but I feel this is a good video that explains the depth of the theme explored in this anime.
