For starters, about the ambition of an anime, honestly it's a difficult point to explain. Simply because it is not an a priori objective observation but one's interpretation of an anime. So what I'm telling you is only a reading grid and may only work for the way I see animes.

Then, now that's said, the question is : why do you watch anime ? Does it only represents entertainment for you or does it have something to give to your perception of... I don't know, life, love, maybe politic, society and so on... That's why I'm gonna exclude slice of life animes from this reasoning first (yet in So Ra No Wo To I'm still astonished at how the anime has developed reasoning and reflections on a number of issues while being a cute slice of life anime). So the ambition of an anime is for me the limit it reaches in its development of a subject, a theme or a problematic. I have almost no memory left of Seirei no Moribito (or just a little) but it seemed to me that it hasn't met my expectations in its development. So, yeah it could have been fulfilling and exciting while lacking a little bit of ambition. Nevertheless, I remember saying that my argument was not particularly relevant given what I remember of the anime.

About the pace, hm... Sometime a slow pace can be very annoying, but there are animes where the slowness of the pace makes it possible to canalize the spectator's emotion. It's sometimes useful at the beginning of an arc or to keep the suspense going.

Kumiko and Ohana ?.... How could I have missed such a similarity >_< It is true that they are similar, in appearance as well as some of their reactions. But hm... No offense, but I think you've been biased somewhere by the similarity between these two characters. I don't think you grasped how much Ohana was a particularly developed character, whether it was her role (not just being the main character) in the story or her adventures. That's why I think our first impressions can have a strong impact, but we need to broaden our ways of seeing a character, other than a comparison even if this one was quite obvious (Yet I was stupid enough for not noticing it haha).

Yuri radar ? Are you... perhaps... into yuri ? Well I should have guessed already by your profile picture. But well... I'm such a hobiron. And sure, the bond between Ohana and Minchi wasn't as yuri as the one between Kumiko and Reina anyway >_<

You're welcome ! Seirei no Moribito kuh, I don't remember much, but its fluidity and pace were undoubtedly its strong points; I was not bored once when I watched it. The worldbuilding, the landscape design, the visual design of ancient China and Japan, they were really nice. Though I think the anime lacked ambition, but I guess it's not actually a relevent point huh. Also I didn't know that it was written by the same autor as Kemono no Soujo Erin, you learnt me something here.

"the plot and the cast may not be that original nor outstanding"

I don't really think so. I mean, what's a outstanding cast ? Isn't it when you remember well the characters ? their personality ? If Ohana were just a typically sweet and cute girl, she probably wouldn't have made such a big impression. Yet, she left a strong impression on me. Her personality, her thoughts, her tender and honest heart. Her doubts and her true feelings that make her such a special girl. I guess that's outstanding for me. I watched Hanasaku Iroha back in 2012, but still remember how lovable is Ohana.

You also talked about her mother. Certainly, I didn't like her at first, yeah but well, I kinda understand her feelings, her desir for freedom; and she's such a strong woman. I still remember the episode where she visited back Isshui (good spelling?) inn, it was very touching (isn't also where Ohana get closer to her grandma ?).

Hanasaku Iroha is great but... hm... I would have loved something more yuri between Ohana and Minchi >_< ... Oh wait... please forget what I just said...

Also, maybe you live in Australia (or Japan), but in any case, have a (early) Happy New Year !

Hi !

Well it's not that often that I see someone with Hanasaku Iroha in their favorites. I often see Aria and Hibike but not Hanasaku Iroha so I'm kinda glad. Also I think that you are someone who is very generous in her ratings.

And... hm... if you don't mind me, I would like to recommend you a few animes that you may like based on your list. Please take it as a thanks. I really think that you will like them.

First, it's Kobato. It's a very emotional anime, not because of its drama nor its romance.... but because it deals with kindness and innocence matters. The main girl is very cute haha.
Then it's Kemono no Souja Erin. It's... well... hm... you will see, teehee :)

Well, that's it. I hope you gonna like them !

Hello !

Eto... You might not remember, but you recommended me So Ra No Wo To and Non Non Biyori in a forum post. So I would like to thank you ! I actually enjoyed Non Non Biyori and loved So Ra No Wo To.

That's it. I just wanted to give you a short feedback.

Have a great day !

PS. Also I want to say that it feels wonderful to find someone who has Aria, Hibike and Hanasaku Iroha in her favorites

much appreciated... it is hard to find these sorta sites.. ;)

Where do you get/read your manga? I have noticed you have alot of hard to find series (in the US that is) and am just wondering how you go about getting your hands on reading them. In particular I am looking for a series called K2 by Murakami Motoka, who also wrote Musashi no Ken, which I noticed you were the only one on MAL to actually read the whole thing. Have you heard of a series called K2, and do you know where I could look to find a copy of it? English or Japanese.

I tend to read the manga if I really liked an anime, since I want to know what happens next :P I usually prefer the manga, though.

Thanks, I'll check out Gintama when I have time. I read about it and it seems interesting. I'm not to fond of detective mangas, but I'll give Shibatora a try since I liked both Area no Kishi and Kami no Shizuku.

If you liked GTO, then perhaps you'll like to read Gokusen (with the female version of Onizuka) or a manwha called The Breaker, which kind of has the same feeling.

Hi!

I'm glad you liked it! I LOVE it, and was really happy when I got the complete series on dvd from my friend recently :P If you like, check out the manga too - it's called The Wallflower or Pergect Girl Evolution, and has currently 96 chapters out (http://www.onemanga.com/Perfect_Girl_Evolution/). The manga goes beyond the anime, and portrays the "relationship" between Sunako and Kyohei better, I think!

I checked out your manga list again, and saw you're reading Kimi ni Todoke - this has an anime which is currently airing (9 episodes so far), if you're interested. If you like reading Nana, the anime is worth checking out. I really enjoyed it, because I like manga/anime with the music theme (Beck, for instance, or Nodame Cantabile).

If there's anything I can help you with, just ask :) Feel free to recommend me something, too!

You're welcome :)

Ok, then I'll recommend you some of my favorite animes: Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (strange, but hilarious), Saiunkoku Monogatari season 1&2 (good plot and character development, nice art) and Loveless (good story and art). Read about them here on MAL and check them out if you feel like...

Hi, thanks for the add :) Hm I see you've read Rurouni Kenshin, then perhaps you would enjoy the animes Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen and Rurouni Kenshin: Seisouhen? The art is beautiful!

Tell me which genres you prefer, and I'll se what else I can recommend you, both anime and manga ;)
