The usual shenanigans, too many politics memes and topics leaked into the main channels and the VNs channel basically died besides the occasional c-word spam. Felt more toxic than enjoyable towards the end, and that's the point when I usually leave. Still have no regrets about that.
Maybe it's my prejudice since I've only been in a single public Discord so far (ironically Sol Press because a friend worked there for a while), but most public servers seem to have too much spam and in-depth discussions about topics are pretty rare. The other issue is that if it reflects the trends of r/visualnovels and its head mod, the JP elitism and gatekeeping would be kinda annoying too (as in most/all translations are shit, don't read in English, "just" learn Japanese etc.). Coincidentally, is there any special reason why you hate both communities?
Making your own server and controlling the environment to not let it get out of hand is definitely a good idea. If your server accepts lurkers, I could give it a shot, although I'm unsure whether I can contribute anything meaningful early on since my JP is still in beginner stage.
Premise looked interesting enough and it's short, so might as well give it a shot. I wasn't the biggest fan of the characters in Cross Channel, but another raw reader I know finished it recently and I somewhat trust his opinions. Plus the art and music delivered so far. I put Black Sheep Town on my "interested" list after combing through the VNs released in this year and seeing the high score on your vndb, will see when I get to it.
Well, at least I'm trying to read some more JP after another VN buddy posted screenshots about a VN that looked interesting (Tsui no Stella). I guess it doesn't help that I barely know any raw readers nowadays since I left my main VN server, so mostly limited to EN readers.
Also forgot to mention Riddle Joker alongside the other VN's by Yuzusoft which I really didn't enjoy except for Mayu's route (which was literally the whole story)
Every game I've played feels like the same one track plot with just a different setting (Noble Works, Senran Banka, Sabbat of the Witch etc..) The only work I liked from them was Dracu Riot since it felt slightly different. Just felt bored reading them throughout tbh

Some of my favourites would be Umineko no Naku Koro ni, Ao Kanata no Four Rhythm, Fata Morgana no Yakata
