Production company TOHO Animation opened an official website for a television anime adaptation of Satsuki Nakamura's Futsutsuka na Akujo dewa Gozaimasu ga: Suuguu Chouso Torikae Den (Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court) light novel on Monday, revealing the main staff and a teaser visual (pictured).

Nakamura originally began the fantasy romance novel on the Shousetsuka ni Narou website in July 2020. Ichijinsha began printing the series under its Ichijinsha Novels imprint in December that year, featuring illustrations by Kana Yuki (number24). The ninth volume went on sale last October, with the tenth volume scheduled to be released on April 2. The light novel has a cumulative 3 million copies of its volumes in circulation, including digital editions.

Comic ZERO-SUM began serializing a manga adaptation by Ei Ohitsuji in December 2020. Ichijinsha published the eighth volume on February 25.

Seven Seas Entertainment licensed both the light novel and manga in English in March 2023. The eighth novel volume went on sale on February 4. The sixth manga volume was released on December 13 last year, with the seventh volume planned for a May 13 release.

The manga adaptation placed seventh in the Print category at the 2022 Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Awards, ranked among the top 20 titles in the 2023 edition of Kono Manga ga Sugoi!'s Female Readers division, and in the Should Be Anime category in MyAnimeList's 2024 edition of You Should Read This Manga.

Synopsis
Within the Kingdom of Ei's opulent inner court is the thriving Maiden Court, where the empress and the four imperial consorts are chosen from five prominent clans. Among them, one pristine consort-in-training, Reirin Kou, stands out as the perfect candidate for the future empress. Her virtue and elegance are unrivaled, and she is flawless—save for her extremely sickly constitution. Compared to the court's gentle butterfly, the boorish Keigetsu Shu is like a sewer rat. Always staring at Reirin with bitter envy, Keigetsu is a disgrace to the Maiden Court.

During the night of a rare comet sighting, Keigetsu's jealousy reaches its peak, and she attempts to murder Reirin by pushing her off a balcony. Reirin is quickly saved from death, and Keigetsu is imprisoned to await her execution. Unbeknownst to all, Keigetsu has cast a spell to swap bodies with Reirin in order to steal all that belongs to her. But while Keigetsu is hindered by Reirin's frail body, Reirin fully embraces freedom and physical strength for the first time in her life, determined to live—no matter whose face she wears. @Kineta Can I ask one question? Why the source material is not properly tagged? This is a Josei title, not a simple romance title and this confuses people like me who are not part of the Josei community.

The comicalization is great. Love the MC, she's so charming and just the right amount of crazy. With TOHO and Doga Kobo involved, I really hope the adaptation will be good!

@perseii There are actually quite a few of these stories. But like isekai in the early '10s and otome isekai/Villainess isekai in the mid '10s, most of them don't get anime adaptations.

This one is soo fucking good. I hope we will have very good voice actors for this one.

Wait, this makes too much sense... Villainess story set in ancient China? And not just reincarnation, but a body swap?

That's a very cool combination, it's about time someone tried this (without breaking the mold too much). Looking forward to the full PV.

I am somewhat impressed that modern Doga Kobo are willing to adapt even otome LN, but not their classic CGDCT. Villainess otome LN + Freaky Friday plot + romance in medieval China - the only thing missing for the ultimate combo is isekai, lmao. But anyway, those who complained about the small amount of shoujo and josei will finally get what they wanted.
