Legendary Japanese alternative rock band the pillows has officially disbanded following their final performance at KT Zepp Yokohama on January 31. The news was announced via the band's official website and X (formerly Twitter) account on February 1, marking the end of their 35-year journey.

In a heartfelt statement, the band expressed deep gratitude to their fans for their unwavering support over the decades. While they acknowledged hesitation in using the word "disbandment" due to its definitive nature, they ultimately chose it to avoid creating expectations of a future reunion.

"The members sincerely thank all the fans for their constant support over the past 35 years. These years have been a truly memorable journey, and it's all thanks to the fans," the statement read. "They hope to meet the fans again through their individual activities in the future."

The news has sent shockwaves through their dedicated fanbase, known as "BUSTERS," both in Japan and abroad. Reactions flooded social media, with fans expressing disbelief and sorrow over the abrupt announcement. Many shared sentiments of nostalgia, calling the band a defining part of their youth and musical identity.

The pillows was formed in September 1989, and went on to achieve cult status, influencing generations of rock musicians. They gained international recognition through their association with the anime FLCL, which prominently featured their music. Despite the challenges of the music industry, the band remained active, continuously producing new music and touring up until their final performance. As recently as December 2023, they had released the limited EP Blank and had been in the midst of their nationwide tour, LOSTMAN GO TO CITY 2024-25, when the disbandment was announced.

Going forward, the band's official website and social media accounts will be rebranded as "the pillows monument," serving as a platform to share updates on the members' individual activities. While the band's chapter has come to a close, their music and legacy continue to live on in the hearts of their fans.
