Singer-songwriter Sayuri, best known for performing the Boku dake ga Inai Machi (Erased) and Kuzu no Honkai (Scum's Wish) ending themes, died on September 20. She was 28.

The news was shared by her husband, Amaarashi, in a post on X (formerly Twitter). "To everyone who has always supported Sayuri, I regret to inform you that Sayuri peacefully passed away on September 20 at the age of 28. In accordance with the family's wishes, the funeral was held privately, attended only by close family members and associates," he wrote. He went on to express gratitude for the support Sayuri received throughout her career: "We deeply appreciate the kindness and support shown to Sayuri during her lifetime, and from the bottom of our hearts, we pray for her peaceful rest."

Amaarashi also requested privacy for the family during this difficult time, asking the media to refrain from contacting them or related parties. He clarified that while Sayuri had received fan letters through her production company as a freelancer, the family has respectfully declined condolence messages and telegrams.

Sayuri made her major debut in 2015 at the age of 18 with the single "Mikazuki," which was featured as the ending theme for the Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace (Rampo Kitan: Game of Laplace) television anime. Her raw, evocative style deeply resonated with audiences, leading to widespread acclaim and a successful debut.

Her other notable performances include ending themes for Boku no Hero Academia 4th Season (My Hero Academia Season 4), Lycoris Recoil, and Yesterday wo Utatte (Sing "Yesterday" for Me). She also collaborated with the band MY FIRST STORY on the opening theme for Golden Kamuy 2nd Season.

Sayuri and Amaarashi announced their marriage earlier this year in March. In July, Sayuri had shared with fans on X that she had been diagnosed with functional voice disorder and would be taking a break from singing to focus on treatment.

Despite listening to her songs on repeat, I never actually saw her face. Now, seeing how she looks for the first time after she’s passed away feels strange. I’ll continue to listen to her beautifully written songs.

RIP

[Edit] - Why did she have to leave us like that? I just can't accept her death (┬┬﹏┬┬) These 3 endings from Scum's Wish, MHA and Erased lives in my heart rent free

Rest in peace, Sayuri. Thank you for all the great songs you made, especially my favourites (Erased ED & Kuzu no Honkai ED).

Its really painful losing someone who is both an inspiration and an idol to you, from a distance she has changed my life without even being able to know this. I'm currently sobbing and will be in a state of mourning for a while. as someone who has never had the privilege of meeting Sayuri I can never understand the grief her family friends and acquaintances must be experiencing. to them and all her fans I wish strength, To her I wish peace. and as painful as this news may be I am eternally grateful for the traces of her she has left in her music for the world to experience. sincerely Sayuri may you rest in peace.

Rest in Peace Sayuri. I always looked forward to hearing her music. To pass at such a young age is disheartening.

I (we) will always remeber her through her songs surely..
I just became aware of this tragic destiny call, too soon to be true, where one of my favourite JP singers of all time lost the battle against dysphonia.
Condolences really to family and husband, cause it's hearthbreaking to lose somebody so young and in that moment of her life (newly wed, rising in fame, I hope living happily) cause of something related to that fantastic voice of hers.
Thanks forever for some of the performances done in the years, I think I listened to pretty much everything at least concerning anime.
I may take an halt to my long dying break and start binge-watching everything starting Scum's Wish probably now.

Her loss will remain with us forever. She will be mourned. Her music and singing always struck me as so emotional. May her legacy live on through us, through craftmens of the trade, and through future generations...

I only knew her as Sanketsu Shōjo Sayuri when I first started to recognize her talent from Boku no Hero Academia. She really had a beautiful voice. But it is so sad to open MAL and See this news.

Ohhhh, that’s sad! But…. What exactly did she die from? I’m trying to find articles that disclose it but none so far have.

What sad news. Erased, Kuze no Honkai, Golden Kamuy and Lycoros Recoil, the endings she performed for were among my favorites.

Rest in peace Sayuri.

@Jacynto Usually if they don't talk, it's oncology. Especially in the wording “chronic” or “after a long struggle with”
