Voice Actress Emi Shinohara Dies at 61
Shinohara had been undergoing medical treatment for an unspecified illness, but despite efforts, the treatment was not successful. The funeral will be held by her close relatives.
Born in Fukushima Prefecture in August 1963, and raised in Ueda, Nagano, Shinohara discovered her passion for acting at a young age. She joined the drama and choir clubs during her elementary school years, and by junior high, she aspired to become an actor. After graduating from Ueda High School, she pursued her education at the Kunitachi College of Music, where she studied music education while participating in musicals.
Her journey into voice acting began when she joined a study group called Voice Arts, where she caught the attention of sound director Yasunori Honda. This opportunity led to her first major role as B-ko Daitokuji in the 1986 film Project A-Ko. Shinohara later joined the talent agency Arts Vision, and eventually 81 Produce, where her voice acting career flourished.
Shinohara's portrayal of Sailor Jupiter left a lasting impression on fans around the world. Her strong, yet compassionate voice gave life to the character's powerful and protective nature, making Sailor Jupiter one of the most beloved figures in the Sailor Moon series. As a key member of the Sailor Guardians, Shinohara's work resonated with audiences and continues to be celebrated by generations of anime enthusiasts.
In addition to her iconic role as Sailor Jupiter, Shinohara voiced several other notable characters throughout her career, including Kushina Uzumaki in Naruto: Shippuuden (Naruto Shippuden), Ophelia in Claymore, and Natsuhi Ushiromiya in Umineko no Naku Koro ni (Umineko: When They Cry).

I never watched much of Sailor Moon in Japanese, and her other roles pale to Umineko's quantity of dialogue for her.
Sad, she was still young.
