Web Manga 'Awajima Hyakkei' Gets Anime

Shimura began serializing the school drama manga on the pocopoco website in June 2011. The manga then switched to the Oota Web Comic site in 2016 where it ended on March 15. Oota Publishing will publish the fifth and final volume on May 13.
Awajima Hyakkei won the Excellence Award in the manga division at the 19th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2015.
Synopsis
This omnibus adolescent drama is about a group of young girls who all attend a "girls-only musical school," recounting the formative years they shared, at times shifting between different characters' viewpoints and time.
Awajima Musical School Training Camp, dubbed the "boarding house," is where young girls gather from all over Japan to perform on stage: Tabata Wakana aspires to be a musical star; housemaster Takehara Kinue attends to carry on her best friend's wishes; beautiful Okabe Emi is a scholarship student who is always at the center of attention; and Ibuki Katsurako, who became a teacher at the school though originally from a family of actresses.
The unique environment of the musical school is simultaneously a respite space for these aspiring girls and also a harsh battleground that pits young students against each other. It is a place where perseverance can lead to blossoming talents, but also to a cruel reality at times. The clear depiction and psychological portrayal allow the subtle inner workings of each character to come through. (Source: Japan Media Arts Festival, edited)

@Gar_Logan Just an all-female yuri bait level? I never expected this from Shimura, to be honest. I always liked that her queer stories were quite realistic and included all aspects of life instead of the banal "everyone is gay."

For the first question, I would say it's more about showing intersect. (It is not main characaters like Fumi).
The story is heavily yuri-coded, but there is not explicit dating or kissing or anything.

@Gar_Logan And does this somehow help to better understand the actions and motives of the characters, or is it just a small element of the narrative that shows that the characters intersect with each other? Also, I was still afraid to ask. Since it's Takako Shimura, how much of the story focuses on lesbian or trans characters? I'm kind of surprised this isn't tagged yuri, even though most of her work deals with either lesbian love, trans women, or both.

@RobertBobert Yeah, for the most part. Technically they are all losely connected (the mean teacher in one chapter will be the lead in a flashback chapter...a girl the mean teacher went to school with back in the day will be the aunt of a student attending now... a girl who made a scene in the background of one chapter will get her own small arc later... stuff like that). They also in volume 1 have some characters that cross over from Aoi Hana.

@Gar_Logan Is it just a Shimura-style medley of different stories?
Jun 27, 2024 9:09 PM by RobertBobert
@RobertBobert Not technically. The series is about multiple generations of girls going to an opera academy and their interpersonal relationships, dreams, regrets, etc.
To be honest I'm not sure how they will handle the adaptation - chapters change character POV frequently, there are multiple timelines spanning over 50 years, and most chapters/arcs serve more as vignettes rather than one ongoing linear story.

@yamiyugi101 They've adapted web manga before, but I don't argue that this is happening more often now due to the increased search for sources for anime.

@yamiyugi101 Well, many of them are either very popular or written by famous authors like here.
Also, is it just me or does the story have something to do with Takarazuka?

I just don't think it lends itself well to an anime adaptation.
