@MadanielFL Then you got stuff like The Idolmaster and Love Live! which are the most mainstream franchises in Japan but have a small base in North America. Even Chainsaw Man didn't catch on as big in the West as other shounen properties. Which is funny because it's the first big shounen series that I absolutely love.

@MadanielFL TenPuru was one of my favorites of the Summer. I love the opening! Really enjoying A Girl and Her Guard Dog this season. Go check out Girlfriend, Girlfriend (dubbed) and The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You as well.

This forum argument is exhausting.

@MadanielFL

they shouldnt be airing the censored version OF ANYTHING unless its only airing that way in Japan at the moment

im pretty damn sure that was one of their big promises years ago... back when people were ragging on them for instead using it to "enhance" their building

IF they endorsed ALL KINDS of anime as well as didn't air the censored versions of shows, i mean.. whotf is paying them money for that? as well as actually helped raise wages both mangaka and animators i might agree with you

but no, production committies are arguably the detriment of the anime industry, so having a western branch that doesnt even take care of its own employees doesn't help

They streamed the uncensored version of Shin IkkiTousen and Harem in the labyrinth tho…

Also I still don’t understand the whole “raise the wages of animators and mangakas” it’s not their job to do that.

That’s like asking NASA to cure world hunger.

anime was doing controversial shit long before the west had any hands in it

theres plenty of anime throughout history CR would never endorse and theres nothing particularly special about what any of the shows you named are doing/did, although i'll give Shield Hero some credit for s1

CR has never been and will never be "necessary" for shows like them to exist

so that doesn't really mean much unfortunately

I never thought they were “necessary” but more like that they are helping make shows we like, so we should appreciate that.

This looking more into the western audience is exactly what scaring many if not most of us

If this results in “controversial” shows like Shield Hero, Harem in the Labyrinth, Tenpuru, A Girl and her Guard Dog, then I don’t see the problem…
On the contrary, the more they make, the better!

@MadanielFL I have the impression that, due to cultural characteristics, the Japanese are more tolerant of "weird premise" shows than Western audiences. For example, JoJo seems to have a more serious fanbase there, rather than an army of memelords like we have.

And why do you think?
I don't know why, some light novel just happen to get popular in the west (like the vending machine isekai) while they don't get as much success domestically.

Shounen is generally popular both in Japan and in the west, while Shield Hero is way more popular in the west than it is in Japan...

I don’t know who exactly came up with the idea, but once on Reddit the creators of the adaptation said that the anime was originally created with Western audiences in mind.
Yeah, the show is more popular overseas then it is in Japan.

That's why season 2 and 3 were announced on Crunchyroll expo 2019, and why Kevin Penkin does the music on it.
And that's probably also why season 2 even ends with a message written in English teasing the next season.

So if I am to buy my merch even from a Japanese direct site like goodsrepublic CR gets some of the money?
It's very simple, any official merch like: posters, mugs, blu-rays, figures, etc... can only be considered OFFICIAL if it's licensed by the production committee.

And since Cr is part of that committee, they will receive part of the profits that the show makes from TV revenue, merch, licensing, and etc...

RobertBobert said:
Are you saying that they were the ones who came up with the idea of adapting Shield Hero as a work with a lot of interest from Western audiences?
Yes, this is exactly why, Shield Hero was already a popular web-novel overseas before it even became an anime.

The Cr employee who suggested to Kadokawa the idea, is the producer Sae Ho Song, and if you go to his facebook you can even see that he is a fan of other light novel series like Oreimo, Haganai, HakoMari...
