'Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 Season 2' Receives Compilation Movie in Fall 2023
Fujii Michihito is returning to direct the compilation movie at Production I.G and Sola Digital Arts, alongside chief directors Kenji Kamiyama (Koukaku Kidoutai: Stand Alone Complex) and Shinji Aramaki (Ultraman). Bandai Namco Filmworks will distribute the movie.
The 3DCG anime series debuted its 12-episode first and second anime seasons worldwide on Netflix in April 2020 and May 2022, respectively.
Synopsis
The year is 2045, and artificial intelligence has undergone tremendous developments. Governments use them as weapons, engaging in never-ending warfare to sustain their economies. The mercenary group GHOST, headed by Major Motoko Kusanagi, is no stranger to this landscape. However, the rapid innovation of this technology causes a new threat to loom over the horizon.
Having left Public Security Section 9, Kusanagi and her group are involved in many operations worldwide related to these proxy wars. But a seemingly simple job of locating an arms dealer drags GHOST into a hidden conflict against cybernetically enhanced individuals, who have inexplicably gained extreme intelligence and physical abilities. Dubbed "post-humans," their emergence sets off a chain of events leading to the reunion of Section 9. Armed with a new mission, it is up to Kusanagi and her reestablished team to prevent global chaos at the hands of these post-humans. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Then a clarifying question, how much does it look like Patlabor, another mecha police show?
It's not as comical (it has its fun moments but yeah) as Patlabor and SAC has an overarching plot that will be resolved by the end of each season. And we'll get clues to the overall plot in some episodes so that we can tie it in, then SAC will have an occasional episodic episode with a regular police investigation like in Patlabor. Also SAC has a more advanced and futuristic technology and they use the internet and virtual spaces lots of times.
But sure, it has common elements, like the idea of a team, some mechs, a cool girl.

sure thing, man
- ghost in the shell (1995) - movie (it has a sequel movie called Innocence)
- ghost in the shell Stand Alone Complex (shortened as SAC) - two TV seasons consisting of 26 episodes (it has a movie sequel called Solid Sate Society)
- ghost in the shell ARISE Alternative Architecture - 10 episodes TV (it has a sequel movie called ghost in the shell 2015)
All 3 of them are somewhat different yet having the same setting, tech and so on. I do recommend to watch the first movie, it's kinda artsy and sophisticated because it was made by Oshii Mamoru but it's watchable and will give you some impressions about what is the story about, what role do are characters play here. Then I recommend to try SAC, it's the core of the franchize and in my opinion the best thing. It's more of a police investigations type anime with sci fi tech.
Arise is ok, made for 2010 audiences.
SAC_2045 consists of 2 12 episodes seasons and I don't recommend you to watch it.

Then what part of the franchise would you recommend watching first if I'm new here?

it was very inconsistent in regards to the setting established in SAC and the visuals were just bad. CGI can look good in houseki no kuni for example but here was horrible. Even if you watch it without watching SAC, it's mediocre and generic with flat characters in a nonsensical plot.

Was it that bad? I thought it was a cult franchise.

Yessir, that's how it is. Not that I have problems with Patlabor, it's a great show. GitS just has a more serious tone.
