'Pluto' Anime Series Announces Staff, Cast, 2023 Debut

Production company Genco opened an official website for the anime adaptation of Naoki Urasawa's sci-fi action manga Pluto on Wednesday, unveiling the main staff, cast, a key visual (pictured), and an announcement promo. The anime series will debut exclusively on Netflix in 2023.

Studio M2, Masao Maruyama's new animation studio, is producing the anime. Manga author Takashi Nagasaki (Billy Bat), best known for his collaborations with Urasawa, is credited as a producer. Director Makoto Tezuka (Atom: The Beginning) is in charge of supervision. Tezuka Productions and Genco are credited for cooperation and production, respectively.

Pluto is based on Osamu Tezuka's Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy) series, taking its title from a villain in one of its story arcs. The award-winning manga ran in Big Comic Original between 2003 and 2009 and was compiled into eight volumes. VIZ Media publishes the series in North America.

Genco exhibited a poster of Pluto at the MIFA film market at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2017, a professional marketplace at the Annecy festival where producers can make project pitches as they seek partners for distribution and funding of animated works.

Synopsis
The world-famous Swiss robot Montblanc has been violently murdered. Humans and robots around the world mourn for the beloved celebrity, made famous for his service in the 39th Asian War. Montblanc's popularity only grew in the following years after the war, thanks to his dedication to nature conservation, as well as his loving personality.

Robotic Europol detective and war veteran Gesicht is sent to investigate Montblanc's tragic demise. Gesicht uncovers evidence of a mysterious entity known only as "Pluto." Along with this, he learns of a plot to dismantle the eight specialized robots from around the world who participated in the war. Racing against time to save those who still remain, Gesicht grapples with his memory, morality, and a world full of hate, desperately attempting to defend the fragile coexistence of man and machine.
