'Ousama Ranking' Gets Special Episode in 2023

Aniplex opened an official website for a special episode for the Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings) television anime on Monday, revealing the staff, cast, and a teaser visual (pictured). The episode, subtitled Yuuki no Takarabako (Treasure Chest of Courage), the special is scheduled to premiere on Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block in 2023.

Yousuke Hatta (Ousama Ranking) is returning to direct the special episode at Wit Studio. Other returning staff include Taku Kishimoto (Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san) for series composition, character designer and chief animation director Atsuko Nozaki (Tokyo Magnitude 8.0), and music composer MAYUKO (Hataraku Saibou (TV)).

Ousama Ranking adapts Sousuke Tooka's adventure fantasy manga, which was originally published as a web manga on the Manga Hack website in 2017. Kadokawa began publishing the manga through its Beam Comics imprint in February 2019 and released the 13th volume on April 12.

BookLive began publishing the manga digitally in English on February 25. The English translation was later suspended due to translation errors and inadequacies.

Synopsis
The people of the kingdom look down on the young Prince Bojji, who can neither hear nor speak. They call him "The Useless Prince" while jeering at his supposed foolishness.

However, while Bojji may not be physically strong, he is certainly not weak of heart. When a chance encounter with a shadow creature should have left him traumatized, it instead makes him believe that he has found a friend amidst those who only choose to notice his shortcomings. He starts meeting with Kage, the shadow, regularly, to the point where even the otherwise abrasive creature begins to warm up to him.

Kage and Bojji's unlikely friendship lays the budding foundations of the prince's journey, one where he intends to conquer his fears and insecurities. Despite the constant ridicule he faces, Bojji resolves to fulfill his desire of becoming the best king he can be. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

its literally marked as "SPECIAL' on MAL but whatever you say.

Because this is the only way to somehow add this recap. The site does not have separate formats for recap episodes.

I’ll only watch it if it’s a season 2 but if it’s a special episode then it wouldn’t be worth my time. Sure special episodes are normally recaps ;/

No it's an anime original spin off episode/series.

An anime original can also be canon if the script was written by the author himself or even confirmed to be canon by him either.

Yes, we know that Yuki Kaji said that on Twitter (kinda why it took a while to get the news out lol) and leakers are saying it's a TV series but for now, we'll just follow the official sources and say it's a special episode.

If it ends up being the case that there are multiple episodes/is a TV series, well, we'll do some kind of update or something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Shouldn't it be a series though? Yuki Kaji tweeted how it's lots of new episodes while the music composer said they made bunch of new songs (doubt you'd need bunch of new songs for one speical). I hear the term episode can be ambiguous in Japanese so probably that's why there is some confusion.
