Production company Shochiku announced an anime movie adaptation of Mizuki Tsujimura's Kagami no Kojou (The Solitary Castle in the Mirror) novel on Thursday. The movie is scheduled to open in theaters in Japan in Winter 2022.

Poplar Publishing originally released the fantasy mystery novel under its Poplar Bunko imprint in May 2017 and later in two volumes in paperback edition last March. The company also plans to ship the novel in children's book version on March 16. Kagami no Kojou has sold a cumulative 1.25 million copies.

Tomo Taketomi began drawing a manga adaptation in Ultra Jump in June 2019 and ended it on February 19. Shueisha shipped the fourth volume in September 2021, with the fifth and final volume scheduled for a May 18 release.

American publishing company Doubleday published the novel in English under the title Lonely Castle in the Mirror in April 2021. New York-based publisher Erewhon Books will release a hardcover edition on July 5.

Kagami no Kojou won the 15th Japan Booksellers' Award in 2018, received the Grand Prize at the Ousama no Branch Book Taisho (King's Brunch Award) in 2017, and placed first on Da Vinci magazine's Book of the Year 2017 rankings.

Synopsis
In a tranquil neighborhood of Tokyo, seven students are avoiding going to school—hiding in their darkened bedrooms, unable to face their family and friends—until the moment they find the mirrors in their bedrooms are shining.

At a single touch, they are pulled from their lonely lives into a wondrous castle straight out of a Grimm's fairy tale. This whimsical place, oddly lacking in food and running water but full of electrical sockets, is home to a petulant girl in a mask, named Wolf Queen and becomes their playground and refuge during school hours. Hidden within the walls, they're told there's a key that will grant one wish, as well as a set of clues to find it. But there's a catch: the key must be found by the end of the school year and they must leave the premises by five o'clock each day or else suffer a fatal end.

As time passes, a devastating truth emerges: only those brave enough to share their stories will be saved. And so they begin to unlock each other's stories: how a boy is showered with more gadgets than love; how another suffers a painful and unexplained rejection, and how a girl lives in fear of her predatory stepfather. As they struggle to abide by the rules of the game, a moving story unfolds, of seven characters trapped in a cycle of misunderstanding and loneliness, who are ultimately set free by the power of friendship, empathy, and sacrifice. I can't believe this!! I've been wanting to read this book for years, and I had no idea it had been translated already! What a failure of marketing.

I congratulate Tsujimura for her success. This is the 2nd novel of hers that will be getting a movie this year.

Sounds like you love this novel a lot! The synopsis intrigues me, do you recommend that I read this as well?

I have not read it. I wish to read it because the synopsis intrigues me.
I'm also interested in the upcoming Anime Supremacy movie. I've been avoiding the novel's English translation because it lacks CLAMP's illustrations.

There we go, that sounds much more like it. A more respectable medium of origin, always of interest, and the concept sounds both intriguing and actually given thought. I'm listening, let's say.
