The NieR: Automata 5th Anniversary Livestream event announced a television anime adaptation for the video game on Wednesday. Aniplex is producing the anime.

Developed by PlatinumGames, the action role-playing game was published by Square Enix on PlayStation 4 in Japan in February 2017, followed by North America and PAL countries in March that year. The game was also released on PC in the same month and on Xbox One in June 2018. The game serves as a sequel to the 2010 video game NieR—a spin-off to the Drakengard game series.

Jun Eishima penned a three-volume light novel adaptation supervised by the game's director Taro Yoko between August 2017 and July 2018.

Megumu Soramichi began drawing a manga adaptation of Taro Yoko's Ongakugeki YoRHa Ver.1.2 stage play in December 2020 on the Manga UP! web magazine. Square Enix shipped the first volume on April 22.

Game Synopsis
Set thousands of years after the events of NieR, the story revolves around a war between humanity's remaining androids and an army of invading machines from another world. Their initial irruption drove the Earth's population to flee to the Moon. In order to reclaim the planet, humanity formed the "YoRHa" squad, a combat droid unit that would fight in a side conflict. Despite the fact that they are denied emotions and have no real names, they can be identified by their distinct attitudes.

The androids are led by the "Bunker," the YoRHa automated infantry squad's headquarters in orbit above the planet, which establishes a self-sufficient resistance on Earth to push back the machines.

Not that hopeful for the adaptation but we'll see.

Automata is the kind of game that is made specifically for the videogame format, I don't think anything else can do it justice apart from being a videogame since it's so specifically made to be a videogame. But that said, I'm gonna hold off on any judgements until I see the anime although I have a feeling that if they are adapting Automata then it wouldn't be as good. If they're adapting the stageplay YoRHa 1.2 then it could be amazing though. But let's wait and see I suppose.

This is my first time ever hearing about this game, but I'm still hyped for the release of the anime

Still haven't played the game, guess now really is the time to finally get around to do that! This could be a really cool anime.

Here's hoping it's better than the game.

No waaaaay... No waay! Holy s***!
I just got mega excited. I'm begging the studio to keep 2B's sex appeal.

If they get it right it will be epic.

If not, well, it will be nice to spend some more time with 2B

Game adaptions are rarely ever any good. At most you can hope for is some good fanservice and music, which I hope they actually use music from the game or new mixes of tracks from the game. At the very least I won't hold my head high and expect any visual masterpiece, especially not from the combat scenes.

there will probably be lots of fanservice from 2B the most like the game

I hope that Ishikawa Yui and Hanae Natsuki will be voicing 2b and 9s in this adaptation too.

But as other people already said - I doubt that this game is possible to adapt without losing the impact of characters and story.

Holy fucking shit probably one of the projects I would have least expected. I am curious whether it's gonna be 2D animation of full 3D CGI to stick with the game's aesthetic. Not sure how much this is needed but should be interesting if nothing else.

Hope this follows well with the games whole feel. The constant emptiness paired with the music really did the game in for me. If this anime adapts that aspect as well, I'm gonna love it no matter how well the plot bends.

Considering the game is one of my favourite pieces of media ever I am pretty worried to be honest, but since this is A1 I'm also pretty hopeful too, I can't really picture what this will be like but I hope it lives up to how amazing the game is.
