The Fuji TV's +Ultra 2022 Lineup Presentation livestream announced an original television anime by Tsutomu Nihei (Sidonia no Kishi, Blame!) and Polygon Pictures on Thursday, titled Ooyukiumi no Kaina (Kaina of the Great Snow Sea). Hiroaki Andou (Ajin, Listeners) is helming the anime at Polygon Pictures. Sadayuki Murai (Sabikui Bisco, Pet) and Tetsuya Yamada (Sidonia no Kishi, Juuni Taisen) are penning the script. The television anime is commemorates the animation studio's 40th anniversary.

A manga adaptation drawn by Itoe Takemoto (Kemono no Souja) will begin in Monthly Sirius Shounen magazine on February 26. The manga will be available on Crunchyroll outside of Asia.

Synopsis
A world blanketed in an endless and ever-growing ocean of snow. The people eke out a living, either huddled around the roots of enormous trees dotting the surface, or high in the canopy, which spreads over the planet's atmosphere.

A chance meeting between Kaina, a youth from the canopy, and Liliha, a young woman from the surface, sets off a chain of events that will change the fate of the world. (Source: Polygon Pictures)

I'll always appreciate an original anime with clear creative vision behind it. Sadayuki Murai is one of the most interesting writers still active in the medium and Tsutomu Nihei will probably bring something distinct to the table. Any original anime this ambitious has the opportunity to drop the ball, but I'll still be eager to see anything that breaks the mold in this largely regurgitated modern anime landscape.

It looks interesting, especially the world and the artwork. I'll give this a look in the future.

I don't understand what happens with Nihei, this premise is simply Aposimz but not, but a new original anime that just from the premise you can see that it's almost like a clone of Aposimz. I don't get my hopes up for that because Nihei is apparently uncreative, sad.

Is snowpunk a thing? Because this is what I think of when it comes to snowpunk.

Love the tune in the trailer. Looks like it could be based on a war (?) in a snowy environment, sounds fun. Kinda looking forward to this but proceeding with caution as there’s a high chance it will be average or even below par.

More are more actually actual creators are getting involved with originals. So I hope its something interesting. Though I am not a big fan of tsutomu nihei personally, but I will check it out regardless

Hm, Polygon Pictures. At least I won't have to worry on them butchering whatever they adapt.

I mean, Drifting Dragons looked good. Human Lost sucks.

I have no faith left in Nihei after Sidonia turned into a harem romcom in second season. Besides, wasn't his latest manga set in the same setting (snow planet)?

Oooohh, now this looks intriguing. Gonna keep an eye on this.
