Manga 'Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare' Gets Anime, Live-Action Films in 2020

Publishing company Shueisha announced both an anime and live-action film adaptation of Io Sakisaka's Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare (Love, Be Loved, Leave, Be Left) romantic shoujo manga on Tuesday.

The anime film, produced by A-1 Pictures (Sword Art Online Movie: Ordinal Scale), will open in theaters in Japan in May 2020. The live-action film is planned for an August 2020 premiere.

Takahiro Miki (Boku wa Ashita, Kinou no Kimi to Date suru) is directing the live-action film and composing the script with Yoko Yonaiyama (Uso wo Tsuite). Filming began on March 20 and concluded on Saturday, taking place entirely in various Kobe locations.

Minami Hamabe (Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun), Riko Fukumoto (Sensei Kunshu), Takumi Kitamura (Harumatsu Bokura), and Eiji Akaso (Tsuugaku Series: Tsuugaku Densha) are starring as Akari Yamamoto, Yuna Ichihara, Rio Yamamoto, and Kazuomi Inui, respectively.

Synopsis
Yuna and Akari are two high school girls with very different views on love: Yuna dreams about romance through rose-coloured glasses, while Akari is down-to-earth and practical. Meanwhile, high school boys Kazuomi and Rio also have different views on love: Kazuomi is an airhead who can't grasp the concept of love, while Rio grabs onto any confession as an opportunity—so long as the girl looks cute. Will these four classmates end up leading a youthful romance that meets their expectations?

Sakisaka began Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare in Bessatsu Margaret in June 2015, four months after ending the serialization of Ao Haru Ride. The manga will conclude in the magazine's June issue on May 13. Shueisha plans to publish the 12th and final volume on June 28. The manga has a cumulative 4.5 million copies of its compiled volumes in print.

Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare ranked among the top ten manga in the female readers category in the 2017 Kono Manga ga Sugoi rankings and won the 63rd Shougakukan Manga Awards for shoujo manga last January. The manga was also nominated in the 41st Kodansha Manga Awards.

It's a question of shoujo being less popular than the other two demography and also having more live-action. But it's in a much better situation than Josei which gets none almost all the time in seasons since it's really really focused with live-action.

Fruits Basket is a remake. Yuri-hime and Zero-G are not shoujo magazine to begin with.

I can see why Josei is not popular in anime form because of the age group. However, shoujo died out because of those otomege adaptations in the late 2000s and mid 2010s.

We get comments like the person above mine because we will never see adaptation of shoujo manga those have more substance instead of cute girls and hot boys and drama, drama and more drama. I bet people don't even know about Ohayou, Ibarahime or Nekota no Koto or Queen's Quality or Suijin no Hanayome or Joou no Hana etc.

And I am not even mentioning the ones that are/were popular and outstanding at the same time.

Uh yeah, Zero G is a magazine shoujo focused.

Since you liked Suiren and Mizore, you will definitely like Yuna. Also, I am pretty sure she will get a happy ending. I mean anything otherwise will lead to a riot. She is BetsuMa's one of the most popular heroines.

omg yes more of sakisaka io's works coming to the screen!

I think the animated film will do nicely actually. I know I'd prefer a TV series but (live action) film adaptations of shoujo manga seem kinda common so I figure pacing is something that can be done well.

This gives hope to other shoujo manga which ended without an anime like Daytime Shooting Star and Tsubaki Lonely Planet since this manga is about to end with a happy ending

I think it was expected since the manga was doing well in Japan.

I can't wait to see the main quartet animated, especially Inui-kun.

Art wise you could immediately see that this is the work of the Ao Haru Ride author.

Will watch the anime as her previous work is not bad at all.

I think you are confusing Sakisaka-sensei with Asada-sensei. Asada-sensei does the illustration of Hibike Euphonium and she is the one who originally designed Kumiko & co.

Maybe so. I know that Asada-sensei is engaged in some kind of shoujo manga, but for some reason it seemed to me that this was exactly this work. Apparently they just like this manga.

Shoujo adaptations have almost died out. The little that they adapt, they are usually these fluffy ones and every time they do, I feel a bit sad. If they intended to adapt a fluffy romance, I would rather see Koiko or Arisugawa. But since they have already announced it, I cannot ignore it because of my baby Yuna. She is my spirit animal. <3

In my opinion it's not as good as Sakisaka's previous works, but still this is def good news and I'm surely going to watch the anime

I freaked out so hard when I heard that the "big news" included an anime adaptation! Ugh! I think I'd prefer an anime series, but I'm okay with a movie too. Just please include all Rio x Yuna scenes, pleaseeee, they're like the most sweet ever.

Oh, this looks great! Definitely going to watch it!
Cool to see A-1 Pictures handling this project, they (+Cloverworks) have been in a really good run as of late and I’m hoping this’ll be another delight from them!

I genuinely enjoyed Ao Haru Ride (post-anime events not too much though), so I’m definitely looking forward to more of this writer works. I’m not too sure if I’ll watch live-action adaption though, I’m not fond of live-actions after all.

I'll check this out, such a shame they are making this into a movie instead of a full series though, a movie's content is like what, 4 episodes of a regular TV anime at most??? -_-

*Sigh* Shoujo always get the short end of the stick when it comes to adaptations, they either aren't adapted at all, the ones that get adapted are the most generic and boring ones or they suffer some other limitations, like low budget, movie format, shorter episode lenght etc. :(

Yeees, I love Sakisaka Io's works <3 I also would like Ao Haru Ride season two, but this is good as well. I like the contrast between Akari and Yuna. My only main concern as I had when Ao Haru Ride was announced for an anime adaptation are the character designs. Well that and hopefully it won't look terrible...but I have faith since it has won a manga award before, and Sakisaka's stuff are usually quite popular. Also, A-1's movies are of high quality so it should be no problem. Surprised that it's a movie and not a series though. Definitely not a surprise it's getting a live action film as well, as Stroge Edge and Ao Haru Ride both got movie adaptations. Time to catch up on the manga!
