Winners of 73rd Mainichi Film Awards Announced

This year's winners of the 73rd Mainichi Film Awards were announced on Wednesday by the Mainichi Shimbun and Sports Nippon Shimbun.

Wakaokami wa Shougakusei! Movie won the award for the Best Animation Film. Based on the novel by Hiroko Reijou and Asami, Madhouse and DLE produced the film with directions by Kitarou Kousaka (Howl no Ugoku Shiro animation director). The film opened in 248 Japanese theaters on September 21 last year and has earned a cumulative 3,566,060,100 yen (approximately US$31.56 million). GKids licensed the film for North American distribution and will screen it in US theaters in April 2019.

The Noburou Oofuji award for creative expression was presented to Kyoto Animation's Liz to Aoi Tori. The film features a new story that takes place within the Hibike! Euphonium universe. The film was screened in 73 Japanese theaters and earned 53,573,900 yen (approximately US$492,400) within its first weekend.

I'm glad to see that Wakaokami won an award. I haven't gotten the chance to watch the movie yet but I'm looking forward to checking it out after seeing the TV series from a few months back
