Seiyuu Unshou Ishizuka Dies

Aoni Production has announced on Friday that seiyuu Unshou Ishizuka died on Monday from esophageal cancer. He was 68 years old.

Known for his deep and strong voice, Ishizuka was known to voice Heihachi Mishima from the Tekken game franchise as well as Yukinari "Professor Oak" Ookido and the narrator of the Pokemon franchise. Some of his other notable projects also include being the voice behind Mr. Satan from the Dragon Ball series, Kaguraba Raihou Gramstahl from Chaos Dragon: Sekiryuu Seneki, Sylvester Asimov from Terra Formars, Donovan Baine from Vampire Hunter, Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop, and more. He has voiced Dino Golzine from Banana Fish and Kane Ibrahim Hasan from Juushinki Pandora as well, both of which are currently airing. Additionally, he has narrated multiple anime series such as the 2016 adaptation of Berserk and Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online.

I am watching Cowboy Bepop in the moment and now I will never look at Jet the same way again.

Hmm I wonder if he'll take over in One Piece as well... he already voices Kinemon there, but I can't imagine Borsalino with his voice.

Who knows? I am sure they have Banjo Ginga succeded him as the voice of Borsalino instead.

Rest in peace, it will be hard for anyone to replace him. I'll surely miss his voice as Borsalino in One Piece, it was very fitting for the character.

The first role I heard him in and still one of my favorites. To think I was happily trawling through Persona 5's Reddit only to be hit with this sad news (P4 Dojima's seiyuu passed away).

It's been a few days, but man, I'm still really bummed by this news...

Mr. Ishizuka was an incredibly talented VA and one of my personal favorites. He voiced so many great characters (Jet and Joseph being two of my faves), and he always gave an stand-out performance in every role. It sounds like he was a great guy IRL too, from what his co-stars have said. The world of Japanese voice acting truly isn't going to be the same without him. :(

Thanks for giving us so many wonderful characters, Ishizuka-san. See you Space Cowboy...
