Yup, you got it right. What appeal to anime fan are not necessarily appeal for general mass(non anime fan).
For example, OPM appeal to anime fan/otaku but it does not appeal to general mass(non anime fan).
Maybe I should use the words 'anime fan' rather than otaku.
It still doesn't appeal to ''anime fan''.
It's aimed for a mainstream audience. The movie naturally reached a wider range. Otaku or 'anime fans' that like OPM weren't it's target audience.
You mean Bakuman only entertain mainstream audience, the general mass(non anime fan) but not anime fan itself even though it's original adaption is from manga? I feel Bakuman manga sold decent though.

Mm I read it as him saying "it appeals to Otaku and to the general masses as well".

It never appealed to Otaku...
It's a shounen Jump manga about making manga in Shounen Jump.
Appealing to Otaku and appealing to the general public aren't mutually exclusive you know?
Sure but he phrased like it's main audience was otaku then it ended up appealing to general public as well.
Most shounen manga have general public (mainstream) as the audience, Otaku are in the minority there. To love ru and ecchi ones aside that is.
Bakuman anime in particular didn't have a noticeable otaku following (only 2k BD+DVD sales from what I can find), and stayed in the air due TV ratings. Hence my surprise for him to even bring the word Otaku, it's not relevant.

Proud of you Bakuman. Well done. Bakuman appeal not just to otaku but also to the general mass although in the form of live action instead of anime.
