Anime Adaptation of 'Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt' Manga Announced

The wraparound jacket of the sixth volume of the Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt manga, which will go on sale on October 30, has announced that the series will receive an anime adaptation. Animation studio Sunrise will adapt the work as with previous Gundam titles.

The series is drawn by Yasuo Ohtagaki and has been serialized in Big Comic Superior since March 2012. Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt is a side story set in UC 0079 during the war between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation.

In an interview with Comic Soon in 2014, Ohtagaki pointed out that Big Comic Superior is targeted at 30- to 40-year-old salarymen, so he has drawn Thunderbolt with these readers in mind, not specifically Gundam fans. He wanted to use the techniques and style of manga to convey the story, rather than simply adapting the Gundam anime, so as to not drive new readers away.

Synopsis
Federation troops and Zeon forces carry out a fierce battle in the Thunderbolt Sector in what was once Side 4 "Mua." The Thunderbolt Sector is a shoal zone composed of the debris of destroyed space colonies, named for the electrical discharges from the metal debris. MS pilot Io Flemming is among the Federation soldiers who are dispatched to the area, where Zeon sniper Daryl Lorenz awaits them on the battlefield. (Source: Gundam Wikia)

Honestly having read it I have to say frankly Crossbone isn't all that great a series or even followup to F91 which despite being crammed into a movie has arguably aged better as a Gundam tale. The Jupiter Empire and Dogatie make for an extremely one dimensional set of crazy omnicidal villains and I'm just not a huge fan of the art style (I think it will play immensely poorly with people and earn that kiddie label as fast as Age did but even then it's just kind of ugly and bland) leaving the mecha design the only real standout thing about it and even then I just don't see the Jupiter mecha flying with people.

Honestly I wonder why people clamor for Crossbone so much or if they've even actually read it and know what it's about and like versus those that see the X-1 design and games and such and figure it looks super cool.

Couldn’t have said it better. After reading some of Crossbone Gundam I hardly could believe this decade long (or more) raving and over-hyping of this mediocre franchise on the net by the non-Japanese Gundam community. You’d say that Gundam Age or Reco would have faired better, because they are the same boring and silly gundam kiddo shows that have even better plot and characters (..).

No one can get enough of Tomino, obviously.

Looks pretty promising.
More U.C. Gundam is always welcome.

Great news indeed. Can’t get enough of UC Gundam! Thank God it ain't that overhyped Crossbone garbage.
Fingers crossed for Hathaway’s Flash in OVA format and more Gundam Origin or Zeta Gundam Define.

Very excited for this! More UC Gundam is always welcome; we haven't had a full series in the universe since Victory Gundam (Not counting Turn A and G-Reco weirdness), so it'll be really good to see. Though still waiting on Crossbone D:

If this is an indication that they're ramping the Gundam franchise back up after its decade-long slump, I'm extremely excited for the next several years.

Unicorn has probably the 2nd best use of 2D animation in the franchise so calling it lacking in a proper budget is simply laughable. The only show in the series that looked better was stardust memory but that series budget begins to die out as it goes on much like its quality of writing.

I know, I was just dumbtrollng.

My thoughts exactly. Ever since I read the manga the Crossbone begging has confused me greatly.

lol okay. He probably meant to say "aimed at the ones that grew up with Gundam"

This is incorrect. Ohtagaki was drawing it specifically so that he could draw new readers, not pander to the Gundam fans. He mentions that the way many Gundam manga are drawn to simply adapt the anime is a turn-off to manga-only readers.

That's actually a really interesting perspective, never thought something like that would actually affect the opinion of a manga reader.

That makes me more excited for it honestly, id rather them try new things than just pander, especially cause the UC doesnt exactly have a perfect formula

It's Gundam, I will obviously watch it.

Cool will watch! Hope that if its an OVA it won't take long to release like Unicorn.

You know it's cool and all that Gundam clearly isn't dying out but they may want to pace things out a little more. Sunrises projects are starting to become more apparent going forward but it feels a little to Gundam centric and I say that with it being pretty much my favorite franchise.

Will it be TV or OVA?

Oct 28, 2015 10:12 AM by Fortress_Maximus

I think this'll be an OVA since there only seems to be only a few volumes out, but I don't know how much content is actually in, but anyways I'm excited for it especially since it's set in U.C.
