Actually, I'd be surprised if Japan doesn't build a real Gundam in the following years.
^ This. We're going to get invaded by Gundams before we know it. Mark my words.

Rotterdam already has some kind of Gundam statue. Not that big though. Just about 2-3 meters.

^Because the U.S. would attack them on the basis that they have WMDs XD.
but yea, they should definitely work on building mobile suits. that'd be pretty neaaat.
If you think about it, mobile suits are like the least efficient design. The only advantage in battle is that you can imagine your movements better because it replicates the human body. I know I'm being a bit too literal with this, but I would much rather fight in something like a jet than a mobile suit (not taking into account the complete awesomeness of a MS, of course. if it were a choice to pilot one, not a fight, then I would pick the MS 10 out of 10 times).

and aren't they the better for it? it means they are free to invest their energy, time and money into developing other things that benefit mankind as a whole. the pursuit of peace through pacifism is far less expensive and less taxing on the populace.
The point is that I can't see a Gundam, as it is, creating peace. But the whole Gundam world includes more stuff (space colonies being the most urgent atm) and I guess they will be focusing on that.

"Next year dozens of engineers, astrophysicists, doctors, anthropologists, linguists — even town planners — will begin discussing how to convert the science-fiction series Gundam, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, 66, into reality. "
"One aeronautics expert involved in the project said that, as a serious scientist, he can see clearly which parts of Gundam are technically feasible and which are not.
this is very interesting indeed. in the future it will become necessary to move away from earth. Japan has always been known to pursue technologies and ideas that most other countries find trivial, making way for the Japanese to come up with something very practical and useful. while it might be years of not centuries before they come to the point of any Gundam universe setting, the very process could produce some very interesting technologies that would become real world tools used across the globe.
man's desire to fly did not just merely produce an airplane. it produced many more things that do not necessarily have anything to do with flying.
I can see merit in such a pursuit.

However, while a real Gundam would be awesome-fantastic, it's power as war machine would also be awesome-fantastic. And I don't want to be killed by Gundam. I certainly doubt Japan will develop these war mechas, since they turned pacifists after the war, but Chis and stuff are to be expected.
