Parody Adult Video of Steins;Gate Discontinued Due to Copyright Infringement Claim

According to the official website, adult video maker TMA has announced they discontinued the parody adult video of "Steins;Gate", titled "Layers;Gate" in response to the copyright infringement claim by game developer MAGES. TMA apologized to MAGES and other producers of Steins;Gate for making troubles and displeasures.

TMA has been producing parody adult videos of anime for years such as "Faith/ero" (Fate/Zero), "CLONNAD" (CLANNAD), "Suzumiya Hahiru no Yuuutsu" (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu), "K-ONBU!" (K-ON!) etc. Shikura Chiyomaru, the President of MAGES., tweeted last November that he was planning to take a legal action against TMA.

They're utilizing Mages' IP to make money without paying Mages for the right. That's generally the reason this kind of legal action occurs. That, or the IP holder fears that the derivative work will somehow harm their reputation. I doubt the latter is the case here, so it must be the former.

Now, this is generally not seen as a problem in the otaku industry. See for reference, well, the entire doujin scene for one thing, which is overwhelmingly tolerated (even seen as beneficial, perhaps) by rights holders despite being in a legal grey zone. But Mages, or at least their lawyers, must feel that this particular enterprise has gotten too big/is making too much money to be overlooked.

It's impossible to know the exact reasons that this particular rights holder went after this particular derivative work for this particular franchise. But it very likely boils down to money in the end. Or bored lawyers. Or maybe TMA's president fucked Mages' president's wife and this is revenge. I dunno! ...But it's probably money.
