Combat baker and automation waitress was surprisingly a much better read than I expected. I'll bluntly say this, I'm a bit biased towards it due to my love for robot girls, and thus it has had a good amount of influence towards my enjoyment of it. Regardless, I'll say this. It's good. It's nothing as amazing as say, Spice and Wolf, but it's nice. It's not worthy of a 9 rating, but I'm giving it a 9 anyway.
The story isn't anything special, but it does its job. The characters aren't particularly well written or anything, but they are charming and brings a smile to your
...
face. I'm just glad that our protagonist isn't "Ordinary high school student #63529".
Lud is the type who looks big and scary, but has a heart of gold. He puts great effort into baking bread. It's a simple job but watching him trying his best to get his bread sold is heartwarming. And his waitress girl, Sven, is a pretty cute girl as well. Her devotion towards him brings a smile to my face. She's far from being the perfect girl who does everything well, but her clumsiness is just part of her charm. I wish the side cast got more screentime, but this is the first introductory volume after all. I'd say my favorite was the 'bro' character, a smart kid who's a heck lot younger than our MC. For the sake no spoilers, I won't be saying much, but I'll say this much. It's not just a happy go lucky slice of life so don't go into it expecting a fluffy cooking LN.
Personally, I really loved the dynamic and little bit of potential romance between the two. It's sweet, shy and awkward, again, just the way I love it. Nothing original, but that's fine.
The art is quite lovely too. There is little to no fanservice present in the novel, and it's just the way I like it. Apologies to those who might have wanted some, but there isn't anything like that. And it's fine the way it is.
The world building in the novel is quite intriguing to be honest. We've got a fair amount of politics going on here, but not an overwhelming amount. The history of the world, the current state of affairs and behind-the-scene happenings, you've got those all.
To conclude, The combat baker and the automation waitress is a lovely light novel which has charming characters, a story which seems to be more than it looks, and cute art. It could be better perhaps, but I'm fine with it the way it is. I hope volume 2 is released soon and we get more of Lud and Sven's antics.
